Each week she prepares for that possible moment by exercising with two male Mends, who are also disabled. She pointed oat that her preparations will take some time, but she has the confi dence she will be ready. os. Whenever she became bored, Amy would wear her headphones and portable radio. Ms. House said, "She has learned a lot from the pageant, and met a lot of nice friends.” Even though she never made the top five, she said she would do it again next year. What pleased her most was when her mother cheered her on during the final ceremonies Saturday night, July 20, she added. The pageant, according to Odessa Crowe, director, “is not a pageant of beauty. Even though all our women are pretty, The Wheelchair North Carolina Pageant is designed to make the public more aware of what it means to be handicapped, and emphasizes the achievements of the disabled participants.” She ex plained the winner would be the spokesperson for North Carolina’s disabled. “All our contestants are winners. Knowing how they have adjusted and dealt with others is a prize in itself,” she added. Here are the results: The 1986 Miss Wheelchair North Carolina: Sandra Hanbaier, Mt. Holly; first runner-up. Ruth Turner, Fayetteville; second run ner-up: Gladys Cox, Raleigh and Gamer. Ms. House finished near the bottom. The former queen, Ms. Angela Langley, Miss Wheelchair 1985, received a kiss from the new queen.
