ha ve a chance to Influence the future
of the national party when the
Democratic National Committee's
Fairness Commission meets in New
Orleans on Saturday, August 24. The
Commission will be bolding hearings
for all Southern Democrats con
cerning the rules for conducting
primaries and selecting delegates to
the 1968 Democratic National Con
vention 'J;
The selection of delegates is an
Important step in nominating a
presidential candidate. At issue are
the questions of guaranteed repre
sentation for elected officials, and
the method of assigning delegates
based on the results of each state’s
Presidential primary.
North Carolina Democratic Par
ty Chairman Wade Smith said the
purpose of the Fairness Commission
is to ensure that the nominating
process is fair to every Democrat
who seeks the nomination.
“We want to make sure that all the
candidates have a fair opportunity
to lead the Democratic ticket in
1988," he said “We want a candi
date who will win, so we have to
make sure the nominating game is
played on a level field. The rules
shouldn’t be biased towards one
candidate and against another."
Smith, who will testify before the
Commission, said that he will urge
that the rules be simplified and
stabilized.
