At United House Of Ptayer For AU People Holy Convocation Begins Sunday By Audrey C. Lodato Port Staff Writer The 99th Annual Holy Convocation of the United House of Prayer For AD People opens this Sunday with introductory services by Apostle C.B. Gibson. Apostle Gibson is pastor of the Motherhouse of the United House of Prayer at 2321 Beatties Ford Road. Monthly through Friday, September 30 through October 4, the church's General Council convenes at 11 a m. There will be programs and preaching nightly. Next weekend features a softball game and band exhibition. On Saturday October 3, the McCullough Scholarship Softball Game will be played at 2 p.m. at West Charlotte High School. A Baptismal service will be held Sunday morning, October 6, at H. That af ternoon at 2, a band exhi bition will take place for the crowd’s enjoyment on th^ church grounds. rne purpose of the Con vocation, according to spokesman Alfred Cloud, is - to “highlight the year with the Holy Week. The church year ends at the Convoca tion and starts over into a new year.” The General Council, made up of pastors and chairmen from the various states, meets to settle mat ters of church business. The Honorable W. McCollough, who will pre side over the convocation, is celebrating his 2Sth year as Bishop of the United ' House of Prayer For All People. The House of Prayer has churches throughout the country. The Motherhouse oversees the smaller churches, known as mis sions, throughout the state. Crawford, Mooresville; Elder W. Baxter, States ville; Elder N. Goode, Hickory; Apostle F. Barringer, Dallas; aad. Apostle J. Henderson, Lancaster, S.C. 1 ----- State chairman and as sistant chairman are Apostles C.B. Gibson and C. Taylor, respectively. Apostle H. Cloud is district chairman of Greensboro. District chairman of Hunt ersville is Apostle D.C. Truesdale. Hie House of Prayer was founded by Bishop Charles Emmanuel Grace who, according to records, came to America from a Por tuguese island in 1903. His church, begun in Massa chusetts, was incorporat ed in 1921. During the period 1923 24, Bishop Grace, known to his followers as “Sweet Daddy Grace,” traveled to the Holy Land and spent time in Jerusalem in pur suit of the Gospel. Upon his return to the United States, he began preaching from city to city. In 1926, Bishop Grace I —-= came to Charlotte and pitched a tent at Third and Caldwell. From those be ginnings, the church first moved to Long Street and then to McDowell. During the redevelopment'of the Brooklyn area in 1969, the temple was tom down. The present Motherhouse on Beatties Ford Rd. was completed in 1970 After establishing his church in Charlotte, the Bishop traveled to other part? of the South.
