Faculty members can apply for
three types of energy-related Facul
ty Research Participations. In ad
dition to summer research appoint
ments, 'sabattical leave appoint
ments of up to nine months can be
made. Faculty members can also
participate on a part-time basis, up
to' two days per week, during the
academic year at certain facilities.
Last year, a program for faculty
members from historically black
colleges and universities, supported -
by DOE’s Office of'Health, and
Environmental Research, was
added. Participants chosen for these
programs receive a stipend that is
based on, but does not exceed, their
university salary.

Oak Ridge Associated is a private,
not-for-profit association of 49 col
leges and universities. It Is a con
tractor of the U.S. Department of
Energy, conducting research and
educational programs in the areas of
energy, health, and the environment
for the Department, ORAU’s mem
ber Institutions, other colleges and
universities, and other private and
governmental organizations.
Southwest Regional
The Southwest Regional of Las
Amlgas was held recently at Rama
da Inn, East Independence Blvd.
Hosted by the Charlotte chapter of
Las Amiga*, the meeting was con
ducted by regional director and
Gastonia chapter president, Annette
Cowan.
Bora Johnson was the luncheon
speaker.
Following discussion of club
business, the regional meeting
conducted four workshop: planning
a successful yet, parliamentary
procedures, community service pro
ject*, and bookkeeping..
The southwest region consists of
Six chapters - Charlotte-Mecklen
burg, Gastonia, Kannapolis, Green
ville, S.C., Mooresville, and Salis
bury.

Ernestine Durante

Durante To Compete For Title
Ernestine Durante, a teacher as
sistant in the Charlotte-Mecklen
burg School System, is one of four
contestants who are competing to be
crowned Omega Psi Phi Mardi Gras
Queen for 1985-86.
Asked to participate in the contest
by Archie Haywood at the Omega
Fraternity House, Durante says the
young woman who raises the most
money by November, when Mardi
Gras is held, will be made the
Queen.
A graduate of West Charlotte High
School, Durante moved to Durham,
N.C., where she attended North
Carolina Central University and
graduated from Durham Business
>
College.
. She has worked as a secretary at
Duke University and with the IBM
Research Triangle Park in Durham.
Her hobbies include bird watch
ing, which she took up in Little Rock,
Ar., where she lived for awhile, boat
riding, reading black-oriented
magazines, and traveling. Durante
has visited such places as New
Orleans, to see the Ali vs. Spinx
fight, and to California. She admits
to be a lover of the Western states.
Now that she lives and works in
Charlotte, Durante attends Mt. Sinai
Baptist Church. She is the mother of
one daughter DaWanna DeLynn.

Johnson C Smith University
recently received a grant for $39,000
from ti$B W.K. Keilog Foundation
The grant will allow JCSU to
participate in the Integrated
Systems Approach to Improvtiw
Management (ISATDO under the
auspices of the United Negro College
Fund (UNCF).
The 18-month grant was made
available to JCSU in accordance
with the W.K. Keilog Foundation s
commitment to UNCF to continue
funding the ISATIM program for the
purpose of improving the governing
and management of its 42-member
private colleges and universities.
Dr. Robert L. Albright, President
of Johnson C. Smith University said
“lam delighted that JCSU was one
of a few, select institutions to
receive a second phase of ISATIM
funding which was clearly based on
JCSU’s performance and
achievements. We anticipate even
more significant achievements with
our new funds - and we thank the
Keilog Foundation and UNCF for
their continued support and
