In School Board Race
Dr. Harvey Sadoff Has Hack Support
By Audrey C. Lodato
Post Staff Writer
Among the five candidates run
ning for one vacancy on the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg School
Board is Dr. Harvey Sadoff, edu
cational director for BSC, a com
puter software company. Dr. Sadoff,
who ran in last year’s school board
race, is a former professor at UNCC.
His involvement with the local
school system encompasses many
roles: as parent* as teacher, and as
an educator of teachers.
Dr. Sadoff has garnered substan
tial support in the black community.
The candidate says this support is
based on trust and on his advocacy
of "black issues” in the past. He
adds, "Being Jewish, I can sympa
thize with the plight of minorities
and their situation.”
Senator Mel Watt, one of those
backing Dr. Sadoff, calls him “far
and away the most attractive of the
candidates who are running, in my
assessment."
Watt adds that Sadoff has demon
strated interest in educational Issues
end has contributed to the educa
tional process.
School board member Arthur
Griffin also believes Dr. Sadoff
'Would contribute greatly to the ~
board, "I think his dedication to
public education is reflected in his
interest by putting himselU*jfgre
the public in the pasfto-frawiMr~
on the board. He’s not an oppor
tunist or a Johnny-come-lately” to
the race, Griffin points out.
According to Sarah Coleman, who
serves with Sadoff on another com
mission, “I think he has deep
convictions and concern about edu
cation for our children.”
Dr. Raleigh Bynum, optometrist
and former candidate for County
Commission, is another Sadoff sup
porter. “We’ve been friends since
1980 when we were both running for
public office,” recalls Dr. Bynum.
“I think without a doubt Harvey is
by far the person we need to fill the
vacancy. He is level-headed and has
the ability to think things through to
the end. He’s obviously interested
and committed.”
Recalling his past unsuccessful
bids for election, Dr. Sadoff notes
that this time around he has the
name recognition that he lacked
before. “People are beginning to call
me up” rather than the other way
around, he says.
Sadoff warns that “We need to be
aware of extremism" with regard to
forces that may attempt to influ
ence board policy.
His 20-plus years in the field of
education are now augmented by
business experience which, he says,
gives him a well-rounded back
ground. As educational director at

By Joe Black
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, In an effort to uplift the
morale of America's citizens during World War II, said: “We
have nothing to fear but fear itself." But nothing stays the
same and today those words have little meaning for many
who are approaching the age for retirement.
Senior Citizens have many things to fear: Insufficient
funds, robbery, loneliness, poor housing, inadequate nutri
tion. and plain ol' Indifference from society. But we should
not let It be like that In these United States of America,
because through tjie years the older citizens have worked
hard on many Jobs; weathered the storm of bias and hatred:
paid taxes to support this nation: fought in wars to pre
serve democracy; and endured the slams of bias as they
struggled to open doors so that Blacks comlngbehind them
could work at new and better Jobs
And yet many of us stand by silently and watch them
struggle to live their remaining years with some dignity and
pride. We can help by writing our political representatives '
and telling them that the Social Security laws must be
amended so as to be relevant to today* economic require
ments. We can alert the police about hoodlum elements that
steal Social Security checks, snatch their purses, or break
into their homes because they are old and defenseless. And
we can take the time to extend the hand of friendship and a
friendly Viello. or an offer to run an errand.
The suggestions are simple, economical, and real, and
my friends, don't ever forget that the hands of time con- I*
tinue to move, and soon they will be you.

which he was appointed by the
County Commission ; and serving as
