Fellows, the brawl that I personally witnessed at West
Mecklenburg High School was appalling.
No team has the right to cross the field to join in the
battle when coaches Ond referees are breaking up two
combatants.
Regardless of who started it,-when a team crosses the
field more fights break out and such was the case at West •
Mecklenburg recently in a game that featured a tremen
dous West Mecklenburg comback effort after the team
was down 19-0 in the second half.
Playing on emotion, the Indians came short in their final
drive and lost, 19-12. •
Then, two players started fighting on the sidelines and
the benches emptied as a flood of gold West Charlotte
jerseys came across the field to join in.
And, as the West Mecklenburg head coach Jim
. Hamacher confiscated an Indian helmet from the grasp of
a former player, he was jumped on by a host of Lions.
Now, fellows, let us get real. A coach is an authority
figure much like a policeman. You do not jump on a
policeman. Why jump on a coach? - * ;
A player who does that should be punished at least by a
one-game suspension.
Winning is important, but as a look at the status of Texas
' Christian and Southern Methodist will show you, the way
you lose is as important as the way you win.
In sportsmanship, all can be winners.
I hope I never have to sit through a brawl like that again.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Independence at Ashbrook
Friday, October 18, IMS
The Green Wave features Junior Hall, Junior Williams,
and Curtis Gingles in a pottot backfield that has caused
South Point, East Gaston, North Gaston, Myers Park,
Crest, and Garinger trouble.
But they barely beat Crest and the restxrf the records of
* their opponents combined would not be anywhere near
.500. .
Already at mid-season, they have not been tested.
The Patriots .started the season with a good defense in
victories over tough North and state-ranked East Burke '
before plummeting to West Charlotte and losing a tough
overtime game to East Mecklenburg.
They bounced back with a 37-28 win over Hunter Huss
and a win over Myers Park.
They would like to get the second spot in the conference
playoffs.
It lodes like East will probably get the number one
position, havinglpst only to non-conference Harding.
Jeff Robbins is the rugged Patriot who is a passing whiz.
His favorite receiver is Greg Clifton. His favorite running
. bags m-e Donald Donald, Marge Orange, and Brad
The Pats need this one, but so does the Green Wave. A
loss here will doom the playoff hopes of Independent*
Although this one is tough to call and the Pats arebn the
road, I pick Independence. Independence 17 AsMbrook 13.
In other games: North 14, Crest 7; West 21, Bast Gaston
16; East 15, Hunter HuSs 7; Harding 30, Garinger 6; South

14, Asheville Sd»ol 6; Country Day 24, Bnmswick Va.
Academy 10; Catholic 6, South Stanly 14; Providence Day
14, Wake Christian 6.
