Duke Audl ^torium will hpve the distinct flavor i,at the request of Chancellor LeRoy T. Walker. t Walker asked that the Foun S der’s Day committee, chaired by Dr. Tyrone R. Baines, build the program around the theme, ‘‘We Are ^Runfty.’’ This is expected to be - Walker’s last year as NCCU’s chief . administrator. Everything but a picnic on the grounds has been scheduled. “3 Vounger alumni, students, staff and faulty win hear the reminis cence* Of elder family members as three . retired teachers, em ployed by the founder, and two alumni* who were students under Dr. James E. Shepard, dis cuss his contributions. All are resi dents of Durham. The former faculty members are Miss Pauline Newton, employed in 1824 as a teacher of English; Dr. Charles A. Ray, former chairman of the English Department; and Dr. Ernst Manasse, who Joined the faculty (as professor of philo sophy) in 1839 as a refugee from Hitler’s Germany. Alumni of Dr. Shepard's era mak ing brief presentations are Mrs. Bessie E. McLaurin, class of 1940, who is also a longtime active member of the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People (which Dr. Shepard helped to cre ate), and B. T. McMillon, class of 1940. McMillon in fact was employed by Dr. Shepard, Just before the founder’s death, when he joined the health education faculty in 1947. Dr. Walker, who has completed 40 years of service on the university’s faculty, will present Chancellor’s Citations to two of Dr. Shepard’s close associates: H. M. Michaux Sr., of the class of 1901, a Durham businessman, and Mrs. Frances M. Eagleson, who retired as registrar in 1W4 after 43 years of Ser vice 'on the faculty and adminis tration. The publie is invited 4*-the pro gram, which is the beginning of the university’s Homecoming Week end. Montgomery County Board of Education. Harrison Is superinten dent <* Chatham County Schools. Ashley is a Chariott»Mecklenburg ’ school principal. Guatsr is a Wake County school teacher. McCarthy is ' associate professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Appalachian Sate University. Shive is Director of Student Recruitment and Financial Aid at Wingate College. "These individuals understand the issues before the study commission and will do an outstanding job,” Lieutenant Governor Jordan said. The Commission will examine current laws and policies regarding school closings in emergency situations as well as the regular school opening and closing dates. Lt. Gov.
