1 Marguerite Howie To Receive Top Scientist Award ? ■><■ • <**Bg*Wrg - Marguerite Rogers Howie, professor of sociology and a principal investigator of lao Re search at South Carolina State Col lege, has been awarded the Mor rison and Evans Outstanding Scien tist Award by the Association of Research Directors of 1880 Colleges and Universities. Hie award was presented at the organisation's 10th . annual symposium held recently in Atlanta. The first woman recipient of the association’s highest honor, Mrs. Howie was selected from a field of nominees rnprroantfng 17 historical ly black land-grant Institutions from It Southern states. Hie award is presented annually to an outstand ing scientist and educator who has demonstrated national leadership in a field of agriculturally-related re search. As a rural sociologist, her research has had Its major impact on human resource development and improving the quality of life of people in the South. A native of Wilmington, N.C., pro fessor Howie received her pre profeesional educational training at Shaw University in Raleigh, and her professional education at Atlanta, Boston, and Duke Universities, Universities of Wsiconsin, South Carolina and the University of Ghana. Her multi-disciplinary areas of study encompass sociology, social foundations, gerontology, guidance and cultural anthropology Mrs. Howie joined the faculty of South Carolina State College in 1987. After 18 years, Mis continues to serve as a model teacher for un dergraduate students in the Depart ment of Behavioral Sciences of that institution. 'S./iSk As a dedicated and respected researcher, op the state, regional, and national levels, lfrs. Howie has written and or presented a combina tion of mace than 60 articles, papers and bulletin. She has conducted research in areas such as Foundations for Self-Determina tion; In-Migration and Its Effect on the Quality of Life; Communication and Transportation Effects on Uti lization of Community Agencies Resources; and A Use of Know ledgeable* in Rural Research. Her excellent grantsmanahip skills are reflected bn the acquisi tion of funds in excess of fl million from the Kellogg Foundation to de velop the Department of Social Sciences at South Carolina State College and from the United States Department of Agriculture for the implementation of state and re gional projects. Mrs. Howie is an active of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, Association of Social and Behavior al Sciences, Rural Sociological So ciety, and Southern Sociological Society. She has served ss a con sultant with numerous agencies surf commission including the South Carolina Commission on Agfa*; Pre-Retirement Council; South Carolina Caucus on Black Agli^; South Carolina Council for Social Studies; Human Relations and So cial Welfare Forum; Commission on the Future of the South; and the Governor’s Consultation on Rural Needs. Each year since IMS, professor Howie has been awarded a Dis tinguished Faculty Endowed Chair at South Carolina State College. In 1M4, she received the W.E.B. DuBois Award from the Associa tion of 8octal and Behavioral Scientists. As this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Scientist Award, the Association of Research Directors presented Mrs. Howie with s com memorative plaque and a cash award of 61,000.
