(Illustration by Janice Dalton) Charlotte - The Theatre Ensem ble at the University of North Caaplina at Charlotte is back on the boards with its production of Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor" run ning November 13-18 at 8 p m. and November 17 at 3 p.m. in the Rowe Studio Theatre. Seating is limited to 80 for each performance. Simon’s “The Good Doctor" is a series of whimsical vigMttea based on the short stories of Anton Chekhov. The stories are droll; the portraits affectionate; the play, while not typical Simon, is chock full of infectious humor and un ending fun. “The Good Doctor” has bean called an actors’ show. Becauae several actors play more than one role in the UNCC production the emphasis upon the actors becomes more important; an emphasis which is reinforced in the intimate environ ment of the Studio Theatre. “The Good Doctor” has an in 1 rigidng range at characters: the man who offers to drown himself for three rubles; a crafty aedue* of wives who finds himself command ed rather than in command; a har ridm who storms a bank and t* bralds the manager for his gout and her lack of funds. Simon explores a wide gamut of characters with levity and irony. Performing all the female roles pxecpt one is Klmi Greene of Charlotte; a junior theatre major with concentrations in both acting and design. Liz Pattenoa. a fresh man acting itudent from Shelby, appears as the wife in “The Sneeze ” Senior Eric Ottfeger of Stanley is the narrator (Chekhov's pefftana) in two vignettes and Pstw M“Tbs Seduction." WllHam Bullock, a junior from Charlotte, performs three rotes Ktetunov in “Defenseless Crea ture," Sexton in "Surgery" and the husband in "The Seduction." Others in the cast are senior Jim Barth of Harrisburg, sophomore Matt Brunson <rf Asheville, freshman Boy Crisp of Charlotte, junior Tony Powers of Charlotte and Alan Sikea. a student at Cantrak Pled mont Comm Director Richard Meyer recently joined the UNCC theatre tacrtty. Previously, he taught seven yean at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor ; six yean at Ploridh State University, Tallahassee, where he was director of theatre and asso ciate department chair; and 10 has directed over 100 major pro ductions in university situation*, and several others as a director at the all-equity Asolo State Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. Meyer cocreated and hosted a nationally broadcast public televi sion aeriea, “Offstage,” which in cluded interviews with major fi gures In Mth century theatre such as John Houseman, Richard Scheduler and Arthur Miller.
