Fifth Street, a local optometrist tm
the only black female optometrist in
the state of North Carolina, was
chosen by the Urban Optometry
Committee of the American Opto
metric Association to share her
succeas story with new optometrlc
graduates and optometry students
at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill
on Sunday, October 17,1985.
Dr. Newsome told of her decision
to make Charlotte her home and the
intricacies of establishing a new pri
vate practice in a city that is
dominated by male optometrists and -
where she had few ties before '
moving here.
Dr. Newsome was an assistant
professor at the University of
Missouri St. Louis School of Op
tometry and a staff consultant at the
Veteran’s Administration Hospital
in St. Louis prior to making Char
lotte her home.
The October 27 speaking engage
ment concluded a two-month week
end speaking tour for Dr. Newsome.

Week Activities
Celebrate Children's Book Week
this week by Joining in the ac
tivities planned for the Public Li
brary of Charlotte and Mecklen
burg County.
The national theme for the week is
“Good Books, Good Times.’' The
countrywide celebration is part of a
national and statewide observation
which emphasizes the importance of
children’s reading.
Children have been invited to par
ticipate in designing a bookmark to

be used in Charlotte-Mecklenburg
during National Library Week,
April 14-30, 1988. Keeping with the
theme, children, grades K-6 will
draw a picture representing a fa
vorite book, one that showed them
the good times to be found in books.
Entries will be turned in to their
branch library or to the children’s
room. Main Library starting No
vember 7, 1985. Pictures will be
displayed in the branches from
November 11-17. The library will
accept entries through November u
for the bookmark judging First,
second, and third place buttons for
grades K-t and for grades 3-6 in each
branch will be awarded. The two
first place winners at each branch
will also receive a children’s book
poster. Winners will be selected by
Saturday, November 16. One win
ning picture will be selected from
the first place winners to be made
into a bookmark
Main Library is planning a spe

cial celebration during the week
Jean Johnson, a. local Charlotte
author and photographer, will
present her Community Helpers
Series book, “Fire Fighters A to Z,"
on Wednesday, November 13, at 3:30
in the Main Children’s Room. Mrs.
Johnson will read her book, which is
aimed at pre-schoolers to second
graders, and will tell of her ad
ventures while writing it. The book
uses an alphabet format, large
photos of Charlotte firefighters, and
simple text to look at the m««lp
and women who serve their com-T^

vides material dealing with respon
sibility about fire Mrs Johnson is
currently writing a book on postal
workers.
The week concludes with story
tellers from the Public Library
