Fraternity Names McDow “Man Of The Year” By Loretta Manage Post Managing EdlUr Wben the members of the Beta Nu Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity began looking for a nominee for “Man of the Year,” they sought an individual who was dedicated, hard working, and re sponsible. The fraternity’s graduate chapter found what it was looking for in Talmadge McDow. He was recently named “Man of the Year.” For McDow the nomination.and unanimous decision was quite mov ing. “To not to have ever thought about being ‘Man of the Year* the honor makes me very bumble and grateful to have been selected," responded McDow. mcuow is a me memoer at me fraternity. And in return lie haa given many years of his life to Alpha Phi Alpha. On the graduate level, as a member of the Beta Nu Lambda chapter, McDow has served two years as president, four terms as secretary and is presently acting at chairman of the chapter’s ritual committee. Earlier this year, McDow was recognized by the chap ter for his enthusiasm and support for the 1965 Alpha Luau. He sold the highest number of tickets to the dinner and entertainment event. As committed as McDow is to his fraternity, his professional career is a top priority with him as well. McDow is an assistant principal at Myers Park High School, where he has worked for the past six years. Before coming to Myers Park, McDow was an assistant principal at J.T. Williams Junior High School and has also worked as science teacher at Irwin Elementary School, West Charlotte High School, and J.T. Williams. All totaled, McDow has been with the Chariotte-Mecklen burg School System 96 years. as an eoocator, McDow sees his roles as being the facilitator for learning in youngsters, to help moti vate, to serve as a role model and to make conditions conducive far learning. He readily admits that be is an idealist in an imperfect world but he projects, "It is my hope that my life in education and communi ty Involvement in some measure has contributed toward improving upon some of that imperfection.” McDow graduated with honors from Living stone College and Marshall Uni versity, earning both his B.S. and M.S. degrees, respectively.
