By Andz^zrtheid Actkmtt Sullivan _ Under Attack Special To The Pott J «• ^ The Sullivan Principles, • voluntary code of corporate conduct for U.S. companies operating in South Africa, are being sharply criticized by many antiapartheid activists who believe the Principles will lead to continued corporate involvement in the exploitive economic system of South Africa. Rev. Leon M. Sullivan, a Philadelphia Baptist minister, introduced his Principles in March, 1977, in an effort to curb corporate discrimination in South Africa, reports the January issue of Black Enterprise magazine. The code calls for complete desegregation in the work place, _eguaL employment^ practices and equal pay for all employees, training programs for and an increase in the number of nonwhites in management and supervisory positions, and aid in improving housing, education, and health care for nonwhites. The Principles have been praised by President Reagan and adopted by 128 of the 350 U.S. companies currently operating in South Africa. Only 32 out of those 128, however, have received the highest “making good progress” rating by the consulting firm which monitors compliance. Critics, both in the United States and South Africa, claim that the Principles help entrench the apartheid system and argue that U.S companies should withdraw completely from the racist country until apartheid is ended. “The same companies that sign the Principles call the police on our Endangered species Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will spon sore a workshop on “Threatened & Endangered Species - Their Past, Present and Future,” on Saturday, January 25, at 2 p.m. Park Ranger Doug Glover will conduct an in formative look at the status of threatened and endangered wildlife species in North Carolina and na tionwide.
