Faces Of Madeline Carroll
By Joann Milan

What does one of the first
five black women promot
ed to first Lieutenant in the
U.S. Marine Corps have in
common with a writer of
lyrical love songs for j
Columbia and Poly dor
albums?
They are the same
person - Madeline Carroll!
Madeline’s picture-in

adorned recruit brochures
across the nation. Hiis
same pretty face sings
lyrical ballads she com
poses herself, such as
“Destiny” on Poiydor
records and the love theme
for the movie “Bush
Trackers." She has also
had songs produced by
Maurice and Verdine
White of Earth, Wind and
Fire and has sung with
such stars as David
Pomeranz (“The Old
Songs”) and Peter Schless
(“On the Wic«B of Love”).
Since the age of 18
Madeline has been per
forming at nightclubs from
Virginia to California and
at concerts with the likes of
Mabel King of/’The Wlx”
and Esther Roue of “Good
Tunes.’’ In 1983 she per
formed at the Black Politi
cal Convention in Sacra
mento, Calif., and
entertained such notables
as Julian Bond and Willie
Brown.
But Madeline doesn’t feel
that the two “faces”
the glamorous performer
and the military officer
conflict. On the contrary,
Madeline lives to sing and
perform AND to help
others. “Ever since I was

two, I knew I could sing. To
be able to communicate to
the masses and make them
feel wonderful, and above
all, give them a sense of
freedom - has always been
my goal.”

She has long been in
terested in helping others.
Madeline watched one of
her sisters, Camilla, die of
Sickle Cell anemia and
lupus while her other
sister, Cynthia, also a vic
tim, went through the pain
ful crises and was
hospitalized every two
weeks. v
In 1979 she herself
became a Sickle Cell
counsellor in Michigan,
because she wanted to
help. “We would bring
people with the disease in;
and tell them the odds.
When they had a crisis,
we’d tell them what they
could take for it But no one
really had any answers.”
Then she found out about
Dianetics counselling,
based on the self
improvement classic
“Dianetics: The Modern
Science of Mental Health"
by L. Ron Hubbard. “I
decided to try it. I was
watching my sister Cynthia
dying and I' war
desperate.”
Dianetics counselling
makes no medical claims
• but has been heralded for
relieving stress associated
J with psychosomatic ill
ness. After two sessions of
Dianetics counselling,
Madeline said, she was
able to help Cynthia over
come the mental and
spiritual trauma of the
disease, and the crises
began to subside. Now,
three years later, Cynthia
hasn't had a crisis since.
“I was amazed. She
was going to a doctor who
was doing research on
Sickle Cell and after her
Diane tics counselling be
told her not to come back
because she didn't have the
disease any more."
'The compassionate Ms.
Carroll has many talents.
At Pinkston High School in
Dallas-Fort Worth, where
she grew up, she was vice
president of the Honor
Society, a Gold Medal
award winner and was
voted the most talented girl
in her senior class.
Madeline received a
scholarship from Colorado
Women’s College in
Denver. As president of the
Black Student Union she
was instrumental in adding
black studies and art to die
college curriculum. She
graduated with' a Bache
lor’s degree in Fine Arts r
and a minor in Political
Science..
After graduation, she r
served admirably in the
U.S. Marine Con* as
public affairs officer'
protocol officer, the first
black woman to be trained
in that field, working side
by side with the. Presiden
tial Press Secretary, Dan
Rather (of CBS News)
and a host of other well
- known personalities.
