Faces Of Madeline Carroll By Joann Milan Special Ts The Post What does one of the first five black women promot ed to first Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps have in common with a writer of lyrical love songs for j Columbia and Poly dor albums? They are the same person - Madeline Carroll! Madeline’s picture-in full Marine brass-recently adorned recruit brochures across the nation. Hiis same pretty face sings lyrical ballads she com poses herself, such as “Destiny” on Poiydor records and the love theme for the movie “Bush Trackers." She has also had songs produced by Maurice and Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire and has sung with such stars as David Pomeranz (“The Old Songs”) and Peter Schless (“On the Wic«B of Love”). Since the age of 18 Madeline has been per forming at nightclubs from Virginia to California and at concerts with the likes of Mabel King of/’The Wlx” and Esther Roue of “Good Tunes.’’ In 1983 she per formed at the Black Politi cal Convention in Sacra mento, Calif., and entertained such notables as Julian Bond and Willie Brown. But Madeline doesn’t feel that the two “faces” the glamorous performer and the military officer conflict. To be able to communicate to the masses and make them feel wonderful, and above all, give them a sense of freedom - has always been my goal.” ** . She has long been in terested in helping others. Madeline watched one of her sisters, Camilla, die of Sickle Cell anemia and lupus while her other sister, Cynthia, also a vic tim, went through the pain ful crises and was hospitalized every two weeks. v In 1979 she herself became a Sickle Cell counsellor in Michigan, because she wanted to help. “We would bring people with the disease in; and tell them the odds. When they had a crisis, we’d tell them what they could take for it But no one really had any answers.” Then she found out about Dianetics counselling, based on the self improvement classic “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health" by L. Ron Hubbard. “I decided to try it. I was watching my sister Cynthia dying and I' war desperate.” Dianetics counselling makes no medical claims • but has been heralded for relieving stress associated J with psychosomatic ill ness. After two sessions of Dianetics counselling, Madeline said, she was able to help Cynthia over come the mental and spiritual trauma of the disease, and the crises began to subside. Now, three years later, Cynthia hasn't had a crisis since. “I was amazed. She was going to a doctor who was doing research on Sickle Cell and after her Diane tics counselling be told her not to come back because she didn't have the disease any more." 'The compassionate Ms. Carroll has many talents. At Pinkston High School in Dallas-Fort Worth, where she grew up, she was vice president of the Honor Society, a Gold Medal award winner and was voted the most talented girl in her senior class. Madeline received a scholarship from Colorado Women’s College in Denver. As president of the Black Student Union she was instrumental in adding black studies and art to die college curriculum. She graduated with' a Bache lor’s degree in Fine Arts r and a minor in Political Science.. After graduation, she r served admirably in the U.S. Marine Con* as public affairs officer' protocol officer, the first black woman to be trained in that field, working side by side with the.
