Study Shows Black Growth Bate Twice
That Of Whites
The nation’s black population
grew at twice the rate of whites
between 1900 and 1984, according to
a report from the Commerce
. Department’s Census Bureau.
The bureau's latest annual po
pulation estimates by age, race, and
sex indicate that blacks totaled 28.6
million in July 1984, up 1.8
million or 6.7 percent over the 1980
census count. The white population
rose from 195.1 million to 201.4
million, up 3.2 percent The total
U.S. population was 236.7 million
(including the armed forces over
seas), up 9.6 million or 4.2 percent.
Census Bureau analyst Louisa
Miller attributes the difference in
growth rates to moderately higher
fertility among blacks, who
increased their share of the popu
lation from 11.8 percent in I960 to
12.1 percent in 1984.
The black population’s median
age rose from 24.8 in 1980 to 26.3
years in 1984. (Median age means
half the population is older and half
is younger than the states figures.)
The 1984 median for whites was 32.2
years, compared to 30.9 in 1980.
Here are other findings from the
report:
-The fastest growing black
population groups in 1980-84 were
those age 85 and over (26.9 percent),
35 to 44 (18.1 percent), and 25 to 34
(17.7 percent).
-The only black population group
experiencing a decline was those
age 14 to 17, down from 2.4 million to
2.2 million.
-The black median age has in
creased each year since 1967, when
it was 22.1 years, and the trend is
expected to continue as the baby
boom generation approaches middle
age. The black female median age in
1984 was 27.6 compared with 24 9
years for males.
-Black females outnumbered
black males by 1.4 million in 1984
15.0 million to 13.6 million. Males
outnumbered females only through
age 17, reflecting more male
births. Among blacks age 65 and
over, women outnumbered men by
almost half a million (464,000)
because females live longer.
The report gives estimates by sex
and race for single years to age 84
and for those 85 and over.
