Excitement Mounts For 31 Debutantes, Their Parents And Their Sponsors By Loretta Manago Poat Managing Editor The excitement mounts. And 31 young ladies are only a week away from participating in the Delta Sigma Theta'8 Debutante Cotillion. Not only will this occasion be • special time for each participant, but April 5 will mark a high moment in the lives of each sponsor, parent and sorority member. This week, the last of the con testants are featured. They are: Dawn Shropshire, Michelle Spears, Mia Sterling, Tonya Taylor, Adrienne Truesdale, Julie Waters and Moya Welch. A senior at Myers Park High School, Dawn is a very active stu dent. She is the secretary of the NAACP, the vice president of marketing in Junior Achievement, as well as a member of Keyettes, Red Cross, the Drama Club, and Distributive Education America Clubs, At Salem Baptist Church, where Dawn attends, she is a member of the usher board. The daughter of Rev. Harvey and Mrs. Cassandra Shropshire, Dawn is ' a past “Miss Junior Zodiac,” a former second place winner in the Optimist Club’s Oratorical contest and a recipient of a scholarship to Queens College. Dawn was also involved in Project Excel. After graduation, Dawn plans on attending AftT State University and majoring in business and manage ment and cosmetology. After Michelle Spears completes her undergraduate studies at the University of Dallas, she aspires to open her own fashion business. Michelle is the daughter of • Scarley and Rosa Shipp. A senior at Independence, Michelle is a letter girl, a majorette, a member of DECA and the NAACP. She has ' assisted in the Special Olympics and Kid's Day. Included among her honors is being the DECA District winner. : The daughter of Barbara Sterling, Mia Sterling is a student at Inde pendence High School. There, she 2 has been active in a musical, • “Finnian’s Rainbow,” as a student 1 representative and as a co-captain 2 of the lettergirls. • A former "Miss Independence" 2 contestant, Mia has also been 2 honored by Who’s Who, the Beta » Club and by being named a march 2 ing band squad leader. 2 Her post-secondary goals include > attending UNC-Chapel Hill and ma ; joring in computer science and > business administration. 1 A lettergirl, an order of the Patriot 2 and a member of the senior eta— - council constitutes Tonya Taylor’s ' involvement at Independence. 2 A superstar girl nominee, Tonya is the daughter of Walter and Gloria ; Pott Taylor. 2 She plans to either attend the • University of North Carolina* 2 Greensboro or the Atlanta Art and ; Fashion Institute and pursue a 2 career In Interior design. Ultimately, Adrienne Truesdale < wants to become a lawyer. To get there she will attend either UNC Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington or UNC Asheville. Presently Adrienne is a senior at South Mecklenburg High School. At South Adrienne is a member of the ROTC, a cheerleader, a lettergirl, a homeroom representative, a mem ber of GQ-Vogie and a member of the Renaissance Club At the church Adrienne attends she is a member of the choir and an usher. - LaSbeta Price .Gov enar’a Page Working As Governor’s Page W« Gnat Oiallenp 1 With little argument, 15-year-old LaSheta Price admits that the week she spent working as a Governor’s Page was one of her greatest challenges yet She and 11 other young ladies from across the state were occupied with assisting with mass mailing and .general office work, running errands, delivering messages, “We worked from • to 5 andbythe end of the day I was tired," responded Miss Price. Having heard about the Gover nor's Page Program through the Girl Scouts of which she in a Senior Girl Scout, Miss Price expressed an interest In the program. "I Just wanted to see how the government works,” expressed Miss Price. Although she stated that she does not have any political interests, Mias Price, a sophomore at West Charlotte High School, Is active In the NAACP. Also at West Charlotte Mias Price is a member of the marching band She plays clarinet. Dawn Shropshire .Active in school Her mother is Delores Fraizer Truesdale. With an interest in working with money Julie Waters has narrowed her career options down to either working in accounting firm, working as a bank teller or owning her own business. She is the daughter of Leroy and Angela Waters. Having taken an interest in school activities at West Charlotte, Julie Is a member of FBLA, DECA, a co-head cheerleader, a keyette, a home room representative and a member of the Red Cross. At church she participates in the youth group and the Sunday School. Julie is also a member of the Freedom Mall Teen board. A Who’s Who honoree, Julie was the first runner-up in West Charlotte’s homecoming queen pageant and she attended Project Excel. After graduation Julie will attend either UNC-Greensboro or North Carolina Central University. Moya Welch’s time is divided between school, church and a part time job. A senior at Myers Park, Moya is a member of DECA. At Mt. Zion Holiness Church Moya is a member of the youth r choir, the pastor’s aide and the young people’s Willing Workers organization. Moya was also honored with the title of “Teen Queen” at Mt. Zion. “ The daughter of Lawrence and Mary Welch, Moya plans to attend AAT or Winston-Salem State Univer sities. Once there she intends on j - exploring a career in business or computer science.
