Zion Baptiat Church, in Salisbury, N.C., has been named to the National Historic Register of Historic Places in America, announced William C. Price, Jr., North Carolina Historic Preservation Officer of the N.C. Division of Archives and History, nuking a presentation to the church on Sunday, March 16,1916. Placement on the National Register is an honorary distinction from the U.S. Department of the Interior. Mt. Zion Baptist is located in downtown Salisbury on North Church St. Organized in 1M7, the present church building wss constructed in 1907. Rev. Harry Cowan, founder of the church, is recognized as the father of the Black Baptist Church in North Carolina. Dr. S.R. Johnson, Jr. is tninistr of Mt. Zion and he has served far the past 12 years. During Dr. Johnson’s administration, more than $100,000 worth of renovations have been made to the church structure. And, all obligations have boon liquidated. Mt. Zion Baptist also recently celebrated 50 years in gospel ministry, and Dr. S.R. Johnson’s 12th anniversary with the Church. Dr. Noel C. Taylor, mayor of Roanoke, Va. and pastor of Ifigh ; Street Baptist Church in Roanoke, • assisted in the anniversary sermon. Mrs. Nora Robinson, assistant ' principal of Overton School in Salisbury, directed the program and Mrs. Ruth Camp was mistreas of ceremonies. A special certificate of appreciation was presented to Dr. Johnson by Dr. C. Cooper of Shaw University. Dr. Cooper is secretary •Of the Cooperative Ministry of North ' Carolina. AridWonally, s tribute of recognition was presented to Dr. Johnson from the downtown min isters of Salisbury by Rev. David K. Huddle of St. John’s Lutheran Church and also from the High Street Baptist Church. Welcoming Roanoke Mayor, Dr. Nodi Taylor, to Salisbury, Council man DarreO Hancock presented Urn with a key to the city. Mt. Zion’s pastor, Dr. Johnson, is ' s life long member of Ifigh Street Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va.
