Felicia Fritz .Enjoys modern dance Felicia Fritz Dances Her , Way To School Of Arts By Loretta Maaago Post Managing Editor Watching Debbie Allen sway with the music, using every limb of her body to project a feeling, Felicia Fritz senses a surge of electricity from deep within. She, too, is a dancer. And next month, Felicia will be attending the summer session of the North Carolina School of the Arts. "What this session will determine is if they like me and if I like them," revealed Felicia. If there is a mutual benevolent feeling between the school of the arts and Felicia, the Northeast Junior High student says that her next step would be to , audition to the school for the fall term. Dancing, since the age of three, IS year old Felicia has an apprecia tion for both modem and ballet dance. "Modern dance is more creative and it allows you to move more ireejy man Dallet; ballet, on tbe other hand is more structured. lition for each iTl I really like M fll’s pretty." Felicia even admitted that she does the dances that are common to today’s teens. She says, "If you can do the dances in class, you can do Just about anything.’’ A student at Dance One where her instructor is Rhonda Sherich, Felicia has also been a student for several years of Miss Donna’s School of Dancing. She has crafted her art by participating in the Moving Company of tbe Children’s Theatre. And in the past she has been seen on Kidsworld, doing holiday specials and speak outs. It was at her instructor’s in sistence that she applied to the School of the Art* No doubt, Felicia’s instructor sees in her the talent to become a professional. Each week Felicia puts an average of four hours into practice. If she is practicing for a dance recital, she may rehearse as much as 10 hours per week. “Sometimes it gets hectic, es pecially when you’ve been in school all day, but once I get to practicing I easily get into the flow oif things.” One who prefers modern dance over ballet, Felicia expressed how she’s able to be more creative through modern dance. “I also like the discipline that dancing provides as well as being able to do some thing that my friends can’t.” Felicia credits her mother for guiding her into dance. “When I was much younger, my mom exposed me i to a lot of cultural avenues. When she saw that I gravitated towards dance, she let me concentrate on that.’’ Felicia shows talent in gymnastics and piano as well. ' Her parents are Robert and Valerie Brown. Felicia fa a mem ber of C.N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church where she belongs to the Youth Group. At school, she is a cheerleader and a member of the Junior' Honor Society. With a bright future, ahead, ^ Felicia aspires to pursue a dancing career, but is also considering corporate law. NC-Jefferson-PUot has awarded A&T State University a $300,000 grant to fund the Jefferson Pilot-Ronald McNair Endowed Chair in computer science at the university. The Jefferson-Pilot grant is a portion of the $500,000 funding need ed for the Endowed Chair, which will honor the memory of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a 1971 graduate of A&T, who was killed last January 28 in the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Jefferson-Pilot’s grant will be combined with a $187,000 grant from the state and $133,000 grant from the A&T University Foundation. W. Roger Soles, president of Jefferson-Pilot, said, “The donation is being made in memory of an outstanding young AAT alumnus, whose career as astronaut, scien tist, physicist, and aeronautical research specialist is well known to all of us.” C. D. Spangler, president of the University of North Carolina, praised Jefferson-Pilot and Soles for the grant. “The university is grateful to Jefferson-Pilot and to its president, W. Roger Soles, for making this Chair possible," said Spangler. "This Chair will enable us to honor forever a great pioneer of our country. Ronald E. McNair, an alumnus of North Carolina A AT State University, was the first graduate of a Historically Black College or University to travel into space. A competent physicist and a modest and winsome human being, he is the kind of person we all take pleasure In honoring.” Dr. Edward B. Fort, A4T Chan cellor, said, "The decision on the part of Mr. W. Roger Soles and the Jefferson-Pilot organization to com mit these funds to the university for the Endowed Chair honoring Dr. McNair is a magnificent gesture of confidence and support for this university’s continued movement along a path of excellence in higher education. “The establishment of this Chair denotes extraordinary evidence of the linkage between the university and its corporate friends, and de monstrates Jefferson-Pilot's confi dence in what A4T is doing to prepare students for the world of technology and competition. It also honors the memory of Dr. McNair, a genius American hero.” Fort said this Endowed Chair in computer science will enable the university to continue Ron McNair’s spirit of excellence for future gene ration of students. 1 I 4 —■ in' ill i Choose ■ ■ ■ EXTRA FIRM SUPER FIRM!
