Robbie Diggs .... .Wants to win big By Aadrey C. Lodato On May IS, Robbie Diggs of Mayfield Memorial Church was elected “Woman of the Year.” That meant she automat! caOy became the church’s contestant in the Past’s CWOY contest. Mrs. Diggs, whose hus band pastors the large church, said she's “just getting started” in the con test Last year’s contes tant, Mary Hollins, has been out of town so Mrs. Diggs hasn’t yet been able to discuss strategy with;, her. However, she’s excited to be taking part in raising money for her church. “If it wasn't a challenge,” she commented, “I wouldn't eveo4ttempt to be in it.” Mrs. Diggs plans to farm a working committee. So far, she’s not sure who’ll be on it, except for Mary Hollins. “I know she’ll be on it,” she remarked. "The contestants hopes to involve the whole church and as many of the com munity people as possible. Although the prizes haven’t yet been an nounced, Mrs. Diggs would like to win something She said she’ll fdel “very happy” if she’s one o£ the big winners. "I would in clude that as one of my extra blessings from the Lord,” she stated. She said she hopes the money she earns for her church "will be used to help others.” When asked how she plans to inspire bar committee members to go out and sell, the minister’s wife replied that she ll tell them. During that time, the Rev. Diggs has been pastor of Mayfield Memorial. The contestant is a former practical nurse who was "pushed out of it with the grandchikfren.’’ The Diggs have six children b.. Peace Association, the Mecklenburg County Mis sionary Union, the Inter denominational Ministers’ Wives Alliance, the Women’s Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Convention of NC, the Lott Carey Foreign Missions Convention, and die Meck lenburg Baptist Associa tion. The awards won by WBTV are for Best News cast, Best Investigative Report, Best Consumer Economic Report, Best Public Affairs, ; Best Documentary (tie with WRAL) and Best Sports Report (tie with WIS). The Best Newscast is for the first night report on the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s - arrival in Charlotte that included live hook-ups from Oregon. • The Best Investigative v Report goes to WBTV News Reporter Chris Clackum and the I-Team for a re port on financial prac tices within the Uncotn ton, N.C. City Manager’s office which led to indict ment and trial on charges of embezzlement. ' ' The Consumer-Economic Award is for C. J. Under wood’s “On Your Side” report on the Reader’s operated in violation at North Carolina law, and which led to changed rules for North Carolina sweep stakes. The Public Affairs Award is for WBTVs “Water For. Africa” project that raised more than $86,000 to help victims of African drought and famine. ■ r The Documentary Award is for “Justice and Jeffrey MacDonald," a half-hour special in which WBTV anchor Bob Inman talked ' with the controversial Dr. —-:-. , ■. MacDonald at Federal prison in Bastrap, TX. The Sports Award is for “Weekend of Speed,” a half-hour wrap-up of last year's World 600 race and weekend in Charlotte.
