Bring out the lawn chairs and on with the fire works It's the Fourth of July and that’s the biggest happening going on this weekend anywhere. The hot dogs, roasting, the cole slaw chilling in the refri gerator and that juicy watermelon waiting to be cut open completes the pic ture of one of the family oriented occasions observed. But more important, in the midst of all the fes tivities remember what this day symbolizes. In dependence and Freedom. For a novice Peterson listener, bursts of applause were beard throughout the evening as Peterson’s fingers glided from one song to another and a piece was recog nized. It wasn’t just the fami liar tunes that Peterson brought to us. There was the privilege of hearing two new compositions he was working on, “Gentle Waltz,” “The Love Ballad,” as well as the piece he was commissioned by the City at Toronto to compose, “City Lights." It all came to a halt much too soon. Suddenly, the magic was over, but the spell Peterson put us under remained. WPCQ Channel 36 will present the first annual WPOQ-TV Jazz Picnic on Sunday,*, July 13, from #7 p.m. The event to be held on the lawn at Hampton Manor, will be a fundraiser to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy. Entertainment far the picnic will be provided by Flight 106 and Jim Brock ft the Montuno Jazz Orches tra. Domino’s Pizza, Bryer’s Ice Cream, Miller Beer and Coca-Cola will have refreshments avail able for $1 each. Admission is $3 and is payable at the door. EZ 104 FM and the Charlotte Jazz Society are co sponsoring this event. CAROWINDS AND JULY July is a hot month at Carewinds. Four outstand ing recording artists will be in concert at the amuse ment park. Starship, Robert Palmer, Billy Ocean and Patti La Belle will take center stage at the Paladium. On July • Starship will be singing “We Built This City” from their new album, “Knee Deep In The Hoopla.” On Saturday, July 11, at 8 p m. Robert Palmer will thrill fans with hits like “Addicted To Love,” “Sneakin’ Through the Alley” and “Bad Case Of Loving You.” Billy Ocean comes to the Paladium on Saturday, July 19.
