Shaw’s Financial Picture Grows Dimmer By Loretta Man ago Post Managing Editor What began as a dim picture, the fact that Shaw University, one of the oldest black colleges in the country owed the government $750,000, continues to grow dimmer and dimmer as the days progress. But a few flickers of hope remain. Shaw alumni and other supporters of the institution haven’t given up on Shaw and are working feverishly to help Shaw get back on its feet. The most important of those concerned efforts was Shaw's ex tention of its June 30 deadline. According to Mrs. Elizabeth Randolph, a graduate and trustee board member of Shaw, one Con gressman, Marvin Dannelly worked to get Shaw an extension on the money due to the government. That extension is now July 30. Mrs. Randolph also said that Friendship Baptist Church, of which she is a member, had another “Shaw Day” during the • Sunday morning services. “As far as I know Shaw had raised approximately $135,000 (over two weeks ago). I’m sure that more has been raised since then, but what the exact amount is I couldn’t say.” With time winding down before ~ July 30 is here, Mrs. Randolph ~ spoke with firmness and conviction that Shaw would meet its financial responsibilities. Her mind seems to be concentrated on the future of Shaw and its lack of an endowment. “There was already a major fundraising drive on before the emergency fundraising drive was on. That fundraiser was specifically to raise money for an endowment.” Another concerned Shaw alumni is Elizabeth Randolph .....Trustee member president of the local alumni chapter, Cedric Jones. “So far, we have raised well over $1,800, but that doesn’t represent all of the monies. We are expecting some more matches and we are still soliciting for funds.” Jones also mentioned that the alumni is working on getting cooperation from church associa tions across the state. “We have even planned to ask other denomi nations for contributions.” Predicting that even when the crisis is over Shaw will still need mercy, Jones added, “It appears that they’re other things to be taken care of.” Jones may have been alluding to the Article written in the Gastonia Gazette on Thursday, June 28, which stated that Shaw must repay $503,962 in federal Young winners display ribbons for their first performance at the Herohey Track and Field Meet in Raleigh this past Saturday. In a more recent article in the Charlotte Observer, Sunday, July 6, it was revealed that Shaw owes the U.S. Education Department about $4.4 million. Shaw’s vice president, Thomas Kee, was contacted for comment and stated that he would return the call to the Post, but never did. Further complicating Shaw’s situation, Jones added that Shaw’s tuition fees have not kept in pace with other colleges. “While Shaw has tried to help by keeping cost down, it had hindered the university.” Through Shaw’s financial crisis, the possibility of Shaw’s dying remain*. According to Mrs. Randolph, that would be a travesty. “Shaw has done too much for blacks and the country for something like that to happen.” If you’re interested in keeping Shaw alive, send donations to: Shaw University, c-o Mechanics k Farmers Bank, P. O. Box 885, Raleigh. NC 27602. Shortly before press time, the Post learned that Stanley Smith, presi dent of Shaw University had re signed after a closed, four-hour meeting with the board.
