Elmer Love Retires _• l*| *■/ . t ' From Police Reserve By Joe Brown Post Staff Writer Volunteers play a major role in the development of organizations, clubs and services of the community. Elmer Love is such a volunteer who is retiring from Charlotte's Police Reserve this year after seven years and one month of dedicated service in protecting and upholding the law in the community. Love is retiring as an officer of the Police Reserve. The Reserve is structured the same as the regular police force and the only difference is the officers are volunteers and there is no paperwork, Love told. “We patrol and do the same things a regular police officer does. Our uniforms are the same and we carry firearms. We are usually recognized apart by the patch on the arm of our uniform which says Police Reserve,” points out Love. The ex-volunteer law enforcer be came an officer on May 10, 1979 when he completed his training at the police academy. Now, a barber by trade, he remembers how he became so interested in being a police officer. "Being a barber, I hear people talk about policemen and the things they don’t like about them. I knew there had to be an explanation for this kind of attitude toward them and I wanted to find out, especially in my community,” recalls Love “1 talked to Rudy Torrence (now i retired) and he told me about the Police Reserve. It was a chance to see for myself why people were thinking so negatively of policemen.” 1 Not only is Love a concerned member of the community, but he is also concerned about blacks being arrested when it could be avoided. This was one of his insights while working as a police officer. He explained that too many blacks were being arrested for unnecessary reasons. He also admits that is not the policeman’s fault but the atti tude and awareness of the law that is instilled in the minds of the offenders. The 36-year-old retiree re * veals that one of the reasons so many young blacks are being arrested is because of negative thoughts others have taught them about policemen and he wants to help change it. i nere were times when we were checking around on duty and kids would run just because they saw us. They didn’t do anything, but when or suspicious,” Love commented. "It is not nice to say, but parents teach their children that policemen are bad. We need a lot of help with this problem. I want to educate the parents and teach them how to let their children know that the police won’t harm them and how to communicate with the police.” "I just don’t want to talk about this problem, but I want to do some BATCH Finishes 4-2 The BATCH Traveling All-Stars returned to the promised land for the first time since 1981 as they beat Greenville’s Aces in Greenville, SC, ■ at Lakeside Park, 19-12, 19-15,19-14, to win the regular season South eastern Racquet Association championship.
