Church Neu* Briefs ” Families, Friends Baptist Celebrate Homecoming | By Jalyne Strang Post Staff Writer First Baptist Church-West will celebrate its third annual Home coming, sponsored by the Women’s Choir, on Sunday, August 10. This celebration will bring families, friends and former members together for the 11 a.m. Worship Service and for an old-fashioned “festival of foods’’ immediately afterwards. The morning service will feature the Homecoming message delivered by the church’s pastor, Dr. James Bradford Humphrey II. Music will be rendered by the Combined Choirs of First Baptist West, under the direction of Clara Junes, with Jerod Green as accom panist. Soloists will be Angela Wood .Frit* and Leroy Waters. Guest musicians will be well known local soprano, Cassandra “Wilson Tucker, a member of Little Rock A ME Zion Church, and Damon Stinson, a 1965 graduate of tlNCC, who was the recipient of 'several scholarships for the study of music. He will enter Catholic Uni versity this fall to pursue a master’s degree. Guest director will be Alice Cade, director of the Church Music Division of the Christian Education Department of the General Baptist State Convention of N.C. A native of Tarboro, N.C., Cade earned a B.S. degree in music from North Carolina Central University, w|>ere she also later received a master’s of art in music education. She is affiliated with the Music Educators National Conference, the National Education Association and other professional groups. She has served as Minister of Music for Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Fayetteville, N,C., where she co-founded the Mt. Sinai School of Music. She has appeared in such Broadway plays as "Kismet,” "Green Pastures,” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” as a charter member of and a partici pant in the Fayetteville Area Cultural Theater. 5 . > Cade has taught at Fayetteville State University and has served as music supervisor for the Edgecomb County Schools. Presently, she serves the General Baptist State Convention, the or ganization through which she hopes to bring into realization her highest ambition: building a sacred cultural arts center at the J.J. Johnson Assembly in Laurinburg. Cade believes that youth may find “the inner self of human existence through the religious expression that can only be obtained through training and exposure in the arts.” The public is urged to attend Homecoming services at First Baptist Church-West this Sunday. WOMEN MINISTERS The second Advisory Council meeting of the Shaw Divinity School-Inter-Denominational Women Ministers and Women with Ministries met on July 19,1988 in the Divinity School Library. The meeting was called by the president, Rev. Elma Thomas, after a brief devotional. Rev. Helen Mcl^aughlin reiterated the scope and purpose of the organization to women ministers and women with ministries. The group discussed and approved the following agenda: Job descriptions for officers and . members, guidelines for the or tion, date and time of meet-/ nd also fund-raising projects. ; The religious aspirations of all - women ministers and women with - ministries can be innovatively 2 fulfilled and achieved through .. this dynamic organisation. The membership at this meeting increased by approximately seven women which brings the total to 25 women ministers and women with ministries. The goals of the or ganization are specifically designed to Include all women with varied and sundry ministries which will include women in the Tents, the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the Elks, Deacon nesses and presidents of. missionary societies, and any other interested aspirants. A newsletter will be circulated among the mem bership. It promises to be developed to highlight the activities of women in the organization and also provide . information for them. It is the philosophy of the organization to help women channel their energies ami interests and ', develop their talents for the better ment of God’s kingdom here on earth.
