The award was accepted by Mrs. Ethridge in a ceremony held at Allstate’s Regional Office at 401 McCullough Drive in Charlotte where she works as a District underwriter. The recipients of the Good Hands Award are nominated and selected by theft- fellow workers. The award is presented only to those who perform outstanding customer ser vice and are involved in community activities. Mrs. Ethridge began ho- Allstate career as an underwriter in August of 1974. She has held the positions of Division Supervisor, Unit Mana ger and has completed the compa ny’s Rotational Development Pro gram. She is presently a District underwriter. Elouise and her husband Robert reside in the Charlotte area. She is, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Avery of Charlotte. Conference For Literacy To Be Held A Conference for Literacy, spon sored by the United Way of Meck lenburg and Union Counties, wjll be held Friday, September 12, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel In Charlotte, N.C., from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The conference was recommend ed by a United Way study completed in 1985 that Identified a major problem in the Charlotte-Mecklen burg community:. at least 80,000 adults cannqt read past a ninth grade levei and thus are considered . functionally illiterate. The Confer ence for Literacy will bring together a group of more than 200 community leaders from all seg ments of Mecklenburg County to learn more about the adult illiteracy problem, to discuss its impact on society, to study solutions used in other communities, and to develop the best possible plan for Charlotte Mecklenburg. Featured speakers at the con ference include Dr. Robert Albright, president, Johnson C. Smith University who will address the problem locally ; the Honorable Ann McManamon, chairperson for the Coalition for Literacy in Cleve land, OH, speaking to national initiatives; and James E. Duffy, president, Communications Net work and Broadcasting Division, Capital Cities-ABC, Inc., who will give the keynote address. Two videotape presentations will be included as part of the conference sessions. One will profile learners - those who as adults have entered programs to improve their reading and math skills. The second video will examine and document four local literacy programs: Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE), operated by Central Piedmont Community College; Tine to Read, sponsored by CaWevision of Charlotte; Charlotte Area Literacy league (CALL); and Mecklenburg County Literacy Council (MCLC). These programs will be on display during the conference. Also on the conference agenda is an interactive session in which all the conference participants will be involved in a stimulating process to develop a plan of action for com bating illiteracy in Charlotte Mecktenburg. State Senator William “Bill” Martin <D-Guilford) will hold a workshop entitled “Making Workfare Workable," which will deal with President Reagan’s call for major changes in the welfare system and suggestion that work fare plays a key part of any revisions.
