Indoor track has been added to the championship slate of the NCHSAA for 1987. Practice for indoor track will begin on December 1, with the first date of competition on December 13. The combined men's and women's championships will be held at the University of North Carolina's Joe Hilton Arena on February 7. A series of qualifying meets will be held on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and schools may also hold outdoor meets using indoor events if weather permits. Approximately 60 teams competed in indoor track last year, which prompted the addition of the championships. The NCHSAA now offers 20 championship playoffs, including 11 for men and nine for women.
