This Weekend Could Set Stage Special To The Post Hampton, VA - There are three weeks left In the 1986 regular season and both divisional races are up for grabs. This weekend could either set the stage early for the champion ship game or it could send the race into the final two weeks. The way this season has been full of sur prises, I must warn all predictors to be careful on this week’s point spreads It looks like Virginia Union is in the driver’s seat in the North, with the only unblemished record in the conference. Knocking on their door are the Trojans of Virginia St. Winston-Salem State is on the verge of clinching their fourth consecutive divisional title in the South with a 5-0 mark. Breathing down their throats are the Golden Bulls of J.C. Smith and the Eagles of N.C. Central. The bottom line about this weekend’s headliners is everyone can hang their title hopes up until next year if Virginia Union and Winston-Salem win their respective games The big obstacle that stands be tween Union and the Northern Division title is their archrival, Virginia State This match-up in the annual Gold Bowl in Richmond, VA, has more on the line than ever before. It’s a game that all records are left outside the stadium anyway and with the battle for first place added to the pre-game hype, this could be the most exciting Gold Bowl ever played in Richmond. According to VA. Union's sports information department, last week’s convincing 56-24 whipping that was put on Norfolk State is a warning to every one that the Panthers are real. The Trojans on the other hands are also in the title hunt, and a victory over Union will give them the divisional lead. But the Trojans will have to win their remaining games over . Norfolk State and Hampton to win the title. Winston-Salem State has won three consecutive Southern Division titles and a victory over J.C. Smith will give them their fourth There might be an unexpected problem facing the Rams this week J.C. Smith is not the same Golden Bulls of the past two seasons. For starters, the second place Bulls are the CIAA's second best defensive team and the Rams are their home coming guest. Smith must win over Winston, Central and Fayetteville to clinch the title. Winston must lose to Smith and Livingstone for Central to have any chance of winning the division. N.C. Central is celebrating home coming, hosting the Bulldogs of Bowie State. Bowie is still search ing for its first victory since November, 1983. Their losing streak has reached 27 games overall and 19 in the conference. St. Paul’s is out to snap a 19 game conference losing streak of their own and they could not have asked for a better weekend. It’s homecoming and this year’s guests are the Bears of Livingstone College In non-conference action, Fayetteville State travels to Elizabeth City State to help the Vikings celebrate homecoming. Hampton travels to Florida A&M and Norfolk State is hosting Howard University in their home coming game. WEEKLY HONORS Offensive Lineman of the Week - Wayne Martin (VA Union) 6-2, 185 JR Washington, DC, WR Wayne helped the Panther passing game with five receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Darius also managed seven tackles, six were unassisted Central beat Elizabeth City St., 31-18. Coach of the Week - Joe Taylor (VA Union) Coach Taylor directed a massive attack that helped the Panthers to an impressive victory over Norfolk State. PRO PIX By Gerald O. Johnson A 9-5 week brings my standing to 66-45-1. That’s a 60 percent ratio, folks! Pretty good for an armchair quarterback!... This week’s Pro Pix. THIS WEEK’S PRO PIX # Atlanta at New England This is a tough game to start off a tough week. It is a must win for both teams just to keep up. The Pats have not been all that impressive against good teams. The Falcons are a good team. Conclusion - Falcons by 10. Buffalo at Tampa Bay Bucs’ defense will win this game. Tampa Bay by 7. Cincinnati at Detroit Bengals will slay the Lions and they won’t need the jawbone of an ass to do it with. Of course, if they did Howard Cosell’s jaw is available. Cleveland at Indianapolis Colts will eventually beat somebody. Who and when is the question. Browns by 8. Dallas at New York Giants The Giants will revenge the early season loss to Dallas. Giants by 6. Green Bay at Pittsburgh This is a “who cares” game but it’s a tough game to pick. Steelers surprised Bengals last week, but will get surprised by the Pack! Packers by 4. Houston at Miami Both teams have asked the President for federal fund ing. Seems they heard the President was willing to spend funds on building a strong defense Both teams could use it. Should be a wild offensive battle Moon over Miami by 2. Philadelphia at St. Louis The battle of the birds should go to the Eagles. Eagles by 3. San Francisco at New Orleans The 49ers are playing solid football, but the Saints are steadily improving This is my upset of the week!! Saints by 4. Denver at L.A. Raiders This will be an excellent football game. If Denver wins, they will have a lock on the Conference title. The Raiders know this. They lost to the Broncs earlier in the season. They won’t lose to them again. Raiders by 6, Kansas City at San Diego I’ve said it before anfd I’ll say it again: The Chiefs don’t lose games that they are supposed to win. Chiefs by 6. New York Jeta at Seattle Excellent football game. This is the fourth week in a row that Seattle has played a very tough game. They don’t come any tougher than the Jets. Jets by 6. Minnesota at Washington Tough game. Both teams played lousy football last week. Vikes have the potential to beat the Skins, but I doubt if they will. Skins by 2. • L.A. Rams at Chicago The Rams are still the worst winning team in football. The only thing they know how to do is win. Bears are struggling with internal personnel problems. The game is a teas up, but I will stick with the Bears. Bears by 3. ‘«j , v- . ..
