He considers Terry Massey as one of the better players in the conference and believes that he will have to use his quick and hot-shooting guards to battle the Mustangs, who really bang the boards. . ' ■’ - East Mecklenburg wrestler Darryl Brown is real ly putting on a show for his fans. Brown won his 100th match recently and became one of the top wrestlers in Mecklenburg County history. At one point, he was 99-9 with 21 straight match es won this season. He wrestles in the 138 pound division. & The 6'8" wrestler lost 22 pounds from his football weight of 160 when he was an Eagle halfback and \ defensive back. The quick and agile young man went to Provi dence Day as a freshman where he was 26-2. He was 25-3 on the East team as a sophomore, 28 F 4 as a junior. £ He was fifth in the state last year. Flowers was an outstanding quarterback at East during foot ball season and U now an out standing basketball player in the Southwestern 4A. From his point guard position, he believes that he exhibits "leadership, rebounding and points" to the team. This is ths beet EagU team in years and they have a legitimate chance at making the state playofb. Flowers is avsraging 18.0 points and 6.0 assists per game. "The major difference in this year and last year is that we have mors skilled people and we are playing together as a team," said the affable 6'A", 200pounder. ___ "We relax more this year before a game,” he explained. "We go hams and we jobs sometimes and we were lucky in that Anthony Trues dale moved into oqr district and we got Teasley as a transfer from Crest. afc&y , we had a lot of doae games last year," he added. "This year, we are winning all our doae games." At Randolph, Flowers was the MVP of the football team and can not dedde at this point in tims which sport he likes the best. "I like the competitiveness of football and ths fact that tbs quar terback has to work hard to gener ate all the parts of the team and get them to functioning to maxi mum effidency," he related. Nebraska and UNCC have bean looking for bis basketball abili ties. Flowers will make some team a great asset and J. C. Smith Gold en Bulls' fans have been rumored as saying they would like to see in a Blue and Gold uniform for football and basketball season. "That would keep him from making a choice," one fan stated. Caldwell comes to Lenoir Rhyne from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he coached outside linebackers last season. Caldwell replaces ing-coaching poaitiorflocally at Maiden High School. Prior to his stint at UT-C, Cald well coached three years at East Mississippi Junior Collsga and sarvad a couple of high school po sitions in the Pensacola, FL, araa. Coldwall played offensive tackle in college at Livingston University in Alabama and aamad his master's in physical education from Mississippi State "We are happy to have someone of Butch's quality and experience with us," said Perry. He comes to us very highly recommended and has sxperisnc# working with linemen on both aides of the ball." Perry also announced that Mike Helms, a Lenoir-Rhyne graduate who coached tight ends ft* A* Bears in IBM, will take re sponsibility for the offensive line. Helms replaces Bruce Ollie who aec«pt«d a high school coach position in Augusta, GA, in De cember.
