Support Our Advertiser* I Shortage Of Trade Workers Continues To Grow | The need for more trained con struction workers will continue to grow through 1995, according to U.S. Department of Labor projec tions. For all construction trades, em ployment in 1995 is projected to be 7.1% higher under a low growth case, 11.8% higher if the industry grows moderately, or 15.8% higher is the high growth projections prove to be true. "National projections are intensi fied in high-growth areas such as the Carolina*," said Stephen P. Uennette, executive vice president of Carolina* Branch' Associated I General Contractor!. "We expect our current shortage of trained labor to increase over the next few years as a result of growth in the industry. Natural attrition and other industries competing for trained labor will also play a role in the continuing shortage. "V "The average age of our trained workers is 40. We are not training new workers as quickly as -our work force is retiring or leaving the in dustry." The Carolines construction indus try has traditionally drawn its trained labor from agricultural areas _ in the two states. With new indus tries coining into the area, construc tion is having to compete for work ers. . Carolina* Branch AGC represents most non-residential construction ! firms in the two states. Many of the firms train workers through a train ing program administered by Caroli na* Construction Training Council (CCTC). CCTC has branch offices throughout the two states. Under the program, CCTC recruits trainees for contractors. The contractor hires the trainee and provides on-the-job training. CCTC helps the contractor develop the training needed, main taining records, and coordinate any related training such as nigblojasses at community colleges. "CCTC is recognized nationally as an excellent construction training program, but even with it, we see' the shortage of trained labor as a major problem in the construction industry," Gennett said. "We are encouraging our contractors to par ticipate in the CCTC training pro grams. We are offering training courses for field supervisors, and we are supporting increased vocational training in the public school sys tems." The Department of Labor projec tions for the nation show the need for structural and reinforcing meUl workers to be the most critical fol: lowed closely by the demand for electricians, concrete and terrazzo finishers, and plumbers and pipefit ters. The implications of these statis tics for the construction industry art clear,” Gennette said. "Without skilled workers available to meet the industry's needs, productivity will suffer."
