Taking college football to Wilmington has a threefold pur pose: 1) To raise scholarship money for students who want to continue their education beyond high school; 2) To provide local residenta an opportunity to enjoy a college football game and addi tional entertainment without having to travel a significant distance; and 3) To provide Wilmington with an opportunity to showcase itself over the Labor Day weekend by attracting alum ni, fans and friends of both insti tutions. It is felt that the event will boost tourism and contribute to the area economy. golden bull OF THE W1 K Reginald Hughes Moses is known as the Native Son on cam pus because he is from Charlotte, NC. Reggie was the spark plug that pulled the Bulls from a 41-31 deficit at Bowie State. He played only 24 minutes of the game, most in the second half and overtime. But he hit six of nine shots and four of four free throws for 16 points. Mooes is one of the leading free throw shooters in the CIAA, hit ting 95 percent of his shots. Moses is a 6 3", 180-pound guard who was one of coach Rob ert Moore's highly touted recruits out of West Charlotte High School. Dante Johnson Vincent Brown Rodney Richardson Upcoming Game Could Decide Title By James Cuthbertson Post Sports Writer With an upcoming game with Winston-Salem State that could decide the Southern Division title of the CIAA, the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls find several team' members at the top of the CIAA in several categories. Dante Johnson is fifth in scor ing with 21.3 per game. Vincent Brown is ninth with 17.5 per game. Johnson is the third leading re bounder with 10.3 per game and is second in field goal shooting per centage with 62.9. Chris Jones is third in field goal shooting percentage with 61.6. Rodney Richardson is fourth with 60.4 percent. Richardson is third in free throw shooting percentage with 86 percent. Brown is sixth in three pointers made with 2.4 percent. Jones is first in assists with 6.6 per game. Rick McCormick is fifth in assists with 6.4 per game. In team stats, the Bulls are sec ond in scoring with 89.1 per game, eighth in rebounding with 41.3 per game, second in rebound margin with a plus 5.3 per game, seventh in three point percentage, 10th in three point defense and fourth in scoring margin with a plus 4.9 per game. Angela Hamilton is seventh in free throw shooting percentage with 67 percent. Sharrion Beard leads the CIAA in three points made with,54 and 4.0 per game. Beard has a three-point percent age of 45 percent. Saundra McCracken leads the assist race with 8.4 per game. Beard has 5.3 per game. The Golden Bulls and Lady Golden Bulls visit Winston Salem for a game with the Rams at the Winston-Salem Coliseum on Saturday, January 31. Barber-Scotia is the opponent on Monday, February 2. On Tues day, February 3, the Bulls travel to Augusta, Georgia, for a game with Paine. Local Entry Tags Tennis Team “Charlotte Heat” Charlotte - The Charlotte Heat will be the name of the newest franchise in the national DOMI NO'S PIZZA TEAMTENN*S league, team owner Bob Benson announced this week. The nickname, the Heat, was chosen from among more than 2,000 entries in a "Name The Team" contest won by Carol Reese of 4704 Old Mill Rd., Gasto nia. Reese, whose name was drawn from among three en trants who submitted the nick name, also had entered one of the four other names in the finals. Her other submission was the Rage, with the remaining final ists being the Finesse, the Pizzazz and the Smash. In winning the contest, Reese received a trip to the 1987 U.S. Open in New York and a five-day vacation to stay at Kingston Plantation, a Myrtle Beach resort with a $3 million tennis facility. Tin excited about the tickets CHARLOTTE and even more excited about Domino's bringing professional tennis to Charlotte," Reese said upon learning she had won the contest. The Charlotte Heat will be part of a $400,000 national league that includes cities such as Boston, Miami, Chicago, San Antonio, and Los Angeles. The league commissioner is Billie Jean King, and team own ers include the Oakland Aces' Roy Eisenhardt, who owns the Oakland A's baseball team; the San Antonio Racquets' Leo Rose, part owner of the San Antonio Spurs baseball team; and the Los Angeles Strings' Jeanie Buss. She is the daughter of Jerry Buss, who owns the Los Angeles Lakers and Pauley Pavilion. Matches will be played in July and early August, with the Char lotte Heat having a chance to be featured in a league-opening match on ESPN if the team sells out its Olde Providence Racquet Club facility. More than 2,000 of the stadium's 5,524 seats have already been sold, and owner Benson said only 250-500 seats will be sold at each match this summer.
