You may be suffering from burnout or stress. Recognising what the stressors - causes of stress -• are is the first step in taking charge of your life ■gain, according to Lin Roghelia, director of activity therapy in the psychiatry department of Duke University Medical Center. "People complain that their life is out of control in some way," she . said. "They may feel as if they're being pulled around by other peo ple or forces." I -- Running away from stress doesn't solve anything. "It's wait ing for you when you get back. At least deal with a small part of it at first. Find out what the -problem is," she suggested. Stress can be positive, such as buying a home, or negative, such as the death of someone close. However, daily stress can add up and not be immediately noticeable. A dose look at what you've, feeling or how you're responding t& your environment may help you recog nise the signs of stress and its cauiM. Physically, you may feel run down or fatigued all the time. Per haps you find it difficult to get up . for work even though you've got . ten enough sleep. Other physical signs may be dryness of the throat and mouth, trembling, stuttering, nervous tics, grinding teeth, clenching of the jew, sweeting, in aomnie, nervous laughter, gas trointestinal problems or irritable ' bowel syndrome, frequent need to tqinate, headache* neck and beck pain, excessive dr loas of appetite and mieaed menstrual eyelet. You may notice changes in your emotional behavior, too. "People become angry or change moods more quickly, while others find they're becoming lees tolerant," Roghelia said. A loee of humor, fsehng helpless and keyed up, or increased risk taking are other Overall, your performance may have diminished. A person may feel less efficient.. People might complain they've got the blahs. "Their initiative and interest has diminished," she added. Peeling distracted or an inability to con centrate on the Job another signs. , "Others exhibit hypermobility - the increased tendency to move about without any reason,* Ro ghelia said. "These people can't take a physically relaxed attitude such m sitting quietly in a chair or lying on the sofa.* . At work, pressure easily comes to mind as a stressor. "Other stree •or* are lees obvious. If your rol* ia ambiguous or than is rol* conflict, you may foal unsun of yourself," she nvealed. "Too much work cam be a strosaor, but so is work under load." Unrealistic expectations in your personal life can add stress as well. For example, a recently re tired man may discover that his golden yean an filled with hours of boredom and an not what he expected. "Lack of support, personality dif ferences, competition or unre solved conflicts in interpersonal relationships an other sources of stress," Roghelia concluded.
