A» a Judge in the recent "WGIV Stay In 8chool Rap Con test", I want to commend each contestant who braved the stage to rap about staying in school. Get ting before one's peers is not an easy task. But students from North Mecklenburg, Bast Meck lenburg, TAP8, Myers Park, West Mecklenburg, Olympic, 8outh Mecklenburg, Olympic, West Charlotte, and Indepen dence did it with finesse and style. No, I'm not a real Mg fan of '• rap, but I can only applaud any ef fort that gets the word out about staying in school. The contest was held at Myers Park High School. Don Cody em ceed the event. Other judges in cluded Darrell McClinton, D.J. Records A ‘Pipes, Sam Young of GM 8am Young Realtors and Charlene Price of WCCB. Darren Steward of North Mecklenburg was the judges' overwhelming favorite. He rap came in two parts, ftmky and in tellectual. A lot of time, thought i and energy went into his perfor . mance and it paid off. Darren ’ won a remote control VCR, cour . tesy of Dr. Dennis Watts and ft $200, courtesy of Clayton Perry. i The second placed winner, "Another Fresh Creation" 1 Ruseell Bowman, Kevin Hark * lees and James Shomo and the "8 ; D‘ Crew"-Alfred Hollins, Wil j lie Witherspoon, Tim Brown and .
