Delta's Conference

Single Mothers and 150 chapter*
across the nation held conferences
with local leaders and many local
single parents.
The following year, Mrs. Cana
dy asked Michigan State Profes
sor Ruth Hamilton to lead the Del
ta delegation to the United Nations
Non-Governmental Organisa
tions' Forum in Nairobi, Kenya,
and to discuss the global perspec
tives of single female heads of
household.
"The response of the many
women attending the workshop in
Nairobi was overwhelming," Mrs.
Taylor recalled, "and many partic
ipants requested that Delta con
vene a global conference on the is
sue." Mrs. Canady issued a call for
the Nassau conference last fall.
Nassau was selected as a con
ference site, Mrs. Taylor said, be
cause the Caribbean offers an
amalgam of all the races found in
North and South America, Africa
and Asia and the Nassau Chapter
of Delta Sigma Theta has had a vi
able Summit II program for the
past five years.
"The Nassau Chapter trains fe
male heads of households in salea
ble skills," Mrs. Taylor adds,
entrepreneurship and office skills
-with the cooperation of the gov
ernment and local schools and
universities which provide the
training. Governmental and com
munity agencies provide day
care,' she relates. The program
also has a health care component
for mothers and children.
"We were also glad to accept the
invitation of the chapter," Mrs.
Taylor said, "because the Nassau
community has invited the confe
rees to look into how the local pro
gram works, to visit schools,
homes and agencies. We won't
just stay at the beach hotels," she
emphasized.
"The problem of single heads of
households are global," Mrs. Cana
dy declared. "This concern is
worldwide and not racial. It has
no geographic boundaries. Delta
Sigma Theta hopes to help women
from around the world network
and discover solutions to the prob
lems of underemployment, low
pay, day care that women share
throughout the world."
Mrs. Taylor said that American
women of all races are expected to
attend. Women from Guyana,
Brazil, Canada and a contingent of
American Indian women from
four reservations, and from Ken
ya, Zimbabwe, Ghana in Africa
have said they would attend. The
cost of registration for the week
long conference is $200 per person
and registration is open to all in
terested persons.

Cab Ownership:
A Plan for Success
rmiati
•SB—]
The city of Charlotte is in
need of expanded cab service.
All hours of the day and espe
cially during rush periods, the
citizens of the Queen City
want fast, dependable trans
portation and a clean comfort
able modem automobile in
which to ride.
Yellow Cab Company has a
plan that will enable drivers to
meet the demands of the pub
lic with better looking Cabs
and prompt service. This plan
will enable all drivers to either
buy or lease a 1985 or newer
cab and start their own busi
ness with as small as a $10
investment.
Experience has shown that
the best possible service is
provided by the individual
driver/owner who is in the
process of building his or her
own business. An indepen
dent business person shows
more Pride in the care and ap
pearance of his or her own
vehicle. Drivers who own
their own taxicabs have a
greater desire to give the type
of service that builds repeat
business for everyone.
A new driver needs a valid
North Carolina drivers li
cense, a record of safe driv
ing and a good working
knowledge of the city. The
company provides a proven
training, defensive driving,
and behind the wheel training
to enable a new driver to
make good money from the
very first day.
As Charlotte emerges as an
international city and tourism
and commerce continue to
grow, the opportunity for an
independent businessperson
has never been better. You
can take advantage of this
city's growth and drive your
own cab.
Come by Yellow Cab Com*
pany at 5006 Beanies Ford
Road, and let Barbara Hardee
or Robert Seals explain this
exciting new program and put
you behind the wheel today.
