Fight Against Birth Defects
Kentucky Pried Chicken restau
rants nationwide kicked off a
month-long fund-raising effort on
Memorial Day weekend to benefit
the March of Dimes Foundation to
Prevent Birth Defects.
The Colonel Sanders Memorial
March of Dimes Campaign, now
in its ninth year, is one of the larg
est corporate fund drives and pro
vides a major source of funds for
the March of Dimes.
Kentucky Pried Chicken sup
ports the March of Dimes in the
fight against birth defects by fund
ing local and national medical and
educational programs. Half of the
funds raised during the campaign
go into the $2.1 million Colonel
Sanders Memorial Endowment
Fund which provides financial
support for research into the cause
and prevention of premature birth
defects and infant mortality in the
black community.
This year, an endowment grant
will support a professional educa
tion program to train doctor and
nurse teams in new methods of
preventing preterm birth. Nearly
10 percent of all births occur pre
maturely, with approximately
two-thirds of these taking place
among black families. The pro
gram is the extension of a pilot
vstudy funded by the Colonel Sand
ars Endowment which demon
strated a reduction tf 60 percent in
the incidence of preterm births.
The other half of the funds
raised go to the local March of
Dimes chapters in the communi
ties where the money was raised.
These funds help support pro
grams such as intensive cars nur
series and parent education pro
grams, as well as clinics designed
' to develop new methods of diag
nosing and treating sickle cell ane
mia.
The fund-raising effort will be
co-chaired this year by Mrs. Clau
dia Sanders, widow of the cam
paign's founder Colonel Harland
Sanders, and football star Mark
Bavaro, of the Super Bowl
winning New York Giants. Bava
ro will travel to March of Dimes
supported facilities nationwide to
help draw attention to and edu
cate the public on the advances be
ing made by the March of Dimes
to defeat birth defects.
Over 4,000 participating Ken
tucky Pried Chicken restaurants
across the country will launch the
campaign during Memorial Day
weekend by donating ten cents to
the March of Dimes for every
chicken menu item sold. Custom
ers will be encouraged to donate
their change in the counter canis
ters in participating restaurants
through July 5. Many restaurants
will sponsor local fund-raising
events, such as volleyball tourna
ments, canoe races and walk-a
, thons to generate additional dona
tions.
Colonel Sanders once said he
would give his last ounce of ener
gy to thd^Iarch of Dimes. The
campaign for the March of Dimes
has become a tribute to his tre
mendous efforts and our commit
ment to good citizenship. Sines its
inception in 1979, the Colonel
Sanders Memorial March of
Dimes Campaign has raised near
ly $6 million for the battle against
birth defects. The campaign ena
bles the entire Kentucky Pried
Chicken system to pitch in and
give something back to the com
munities in which they do busi
ness.
TEAMING UP FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE - New York
Giants tight end Mark Bavaro teams up with Marchof Dimes
poster child Pamela Thomas, age five, to launch the ninth an
nual Colonel Sanders Memorial March of Dimes Campaign
which runs from Memorial Day weekend through Indepen
dence Day weekend. Bavaro is the national campaign co
chairperson for the annual Kentucky Fried Chicken fund
drive which has raised nearly $6 million for the March of
Dimes since 1979.
