* Sarah Ballard Ballard Retired After 40 Years ' For the past 40 years education . has been Sarah Cherry Ballard's profession. Knowing early in life that her goal would be to help all those she came in contact with Jo perceive and appreciate their bwn God-given worth, Mrs. Bal lard's career has been a labor of Mrs. Ballard retired from Chantilly Elementary School where she spent 17 years . Work ing so closely with children, Mrs. Ballard's word of advice for those who follow in that profession is: "Be frilly aware that children do tknow when they are loved, re wppctad and treated fairly. A . While Mrs. Ballard spent most of her professional career as a li brarian, the first job she accepted in 1946 was that of a Science and Mathematics teacher at C.F. Hope High School in Burgaw, NC. However her first introduction to the library system came in 1960 when she worked for the Fairfield County Training School in Winnsboro as a librarian/ teacher. Mrs. Ballard spent six ycsae there and was very instru mental in helping the school set up and operate its first library. Although Mrs. Ballard and her husband moved to Charlotte, in 1962 she continued to work at SJWarSssrtt: brarian's position at the Alexan der Street School and Morgan School. 1957 was also die year that she and her husband became the parent* of a eon, Gary. Mrs. Ballard's work as a li brarian shone. It wasn't long be fore she was singled out to update the library organisation and ser vices at Alexander street School, Fairview Elementary 8chool and Ada Jenkins School after the city and county school systems con solidated. I In I960, she was elected to serve as librarian at Druid Hills School when it opened in the fall of 1960 and served there for 10 years. -Work, was just one facet of Mrs. Ballard's life. Since she has resided in the Druid Hills community, she has been an ac tive member of its community or ganisations, including the Druid Hills Garden Club and Druid Hills Action Committee. Pres ently she is first vice-chairperson for; Druid Hills Precinct #56 Coinmittee. •Her involvement with the church has also made up a large p#rt of her life. A member of First Baptist Church-West, Mrs. Ballkrd is superintendent of the junior high school and senior high school department and teaches the junior high school class. } A graduate of Shaw Univentty where she received her B8 in Science and Mathematics Mrs. Ballard also attained her Mas ters of Science degree in Library Science from the Catholic Uni versity of America. Her sen, <5aiy and Ms wife, Betty Jean who are employed with the North Hampton County School are the parents of 15- month old Gary Dean Ballard Jr. I Going On Vacation?
