the ability to speak flawlessly and
communicate effectively through
written material and she loved it
By the time she reached high
■chool, Berlinda was president of
the debating society and the dra
ma club. Her first play went to
state competition whure she lost
an award to a football player who
had been recruited for a special
bit." It was then that Berlinda re
alized that "you don’t always get
the things you deserve, or think
you deserve."
This insight coincided with
some good advice from a suppor
tive teacher, who told Berlinda she
must learn to trust her own in
stincts and not to rely on others.
That instinct and self-reliance
spurred Berlinda on to win every
possible state award offered to
North Carolina high school stu
dents and several special acting
awards which were created just
for her.
As a sophomore Berlinda re
ceived a full scholarship to a spe
cial acting program at The Hamp
ton Institute in Hampton, Virginia.
In fact, Berlinda was awarded full
scholarships to complete all of her
special drama training, including
a four year course of study at The
North Carolina School of the Arts,
where she earned a Bachelor of
Pine Arta degree and Rose Bru
ford's School of Acting in London,
England.
Berlinda's first professional act
ing job was with the Carolina Re
pertory Company in their produc
tion of "The Wonderful O.” Fol
lowing that, Berlinda moved to
Washington, D.C., where she land
ed a job in the Ford Theatre's ver
sion of "Godspell.'' After a good
nine-month run, Berlinda moved
to New York where she appeared
with John Cullum in a short-lived,
off-Broadway play, then audi
tioned for and won a part in Jo
seph Papp's "What the Wine
Sellers Buy."
During her stay in New York,
Berlinda was selected as one of
five students to study with Ada
Mather, whose students have in
cluded Sir. Laurence Olivier and
Richard Chamberlain.
After two and one-half years in
New York, Berlinda moved to
Hollywood, where following ap
pearances as a guest star on such
shows as "Mannix," "Streets of San
Francisco," "Police Woman," "
That's My Mama," and "Sanford
and Son," she landed a role as a
regular on the "Jeffersons," where
she was to perform as a co-star for
10 years.
Since leaving the Jeffenons,
Berlinda has appeared as a guest
star on such shows as "Hotel,"
"Matt Houston,”" Fantasy Island,"
"The Love Boat," "Airwolf," and
"The New FBI," as well as starring
in the ABC movie for television,
"International Airport."
In her spare time, Berlinda does
volunteer work for community
groups and organizations such as
Planned Parenthood, The Ameri
can Cancer Society, The March of
Dimes, and High Blood Pressure
Foundation. She enjoys playing
tennis, sailing and cooking.

she points out. "I'm concerned
