Helton and family saw a dream come true on Sunday. February 28th. The Helton family recently celebrat ed the formi opening of Helton Manor Care. Helton manor Care Is a 52-bed residential care facility located at 2140 Milton Road, In north east Charlotte. Rev. Helton, owner of Helton Manor Care. Is the pastor of Phillips Temple, a large Chris tian Methodist Episcopal church In Dayton, Ohio. Charles Helton Is a native of Charlotte. He was reared on a ' farm In the J. H. Gunn communl- ■ ty. He attended Logan Chapel CME Church where he later be came pastor. While growing up he saw the need for loving care of the elder ly- Helton Manor Care Is a 17.000-square-foot facility. Rev. Helton says Uie home will serve mostly older persons "who are In need of sup>ervlsory, loving care. They may have dllhculty walk ing. bathing or dressing, but not the kind of p>erson who needs skilled medical care." Helton Manor Is not a nursing home. Photo Bjr Ruotell Clark Foster Destined For Success By Russell Clark Post Staff Writer As a kid growing up In Rock Hill, S.C., Sam R. Foster, 11 had a vision of being his own boss at an early age. Now at age 30, he Is owner of S.R Foster Company. Ltd. and paving his way to a bright career. "From the time I was she, 1 had dreamed about being a doctor or lawyer because 1 wanted to be a sole practitioner," he says. "It was not until my second year In college that I began to realize I wanted to become a business man." Seated In the Rubin Center Of fice Building on Carrowlnds Boulevard, his general contract ing firm Is currently Involved In major construction In Char lotte, Charleston and Salisbury. Opened In 1985, the S.R Foster Co. employs nine full-time em ployees and 20 permanent part- time laborers. Perhaps one asset to the mi nority owned business worth mentioning Is Its endorsement by a prominent local family. "Sam Is definitely a good per son and a good businessman," points out James Jordan, father of Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan. "My financial Involve ment with his company has been veiy little and he's gotten to where he Is today own his own. He makes sound business deci sions and he doesn't try to over step his limitations." In 1987, Foster was featured in Ebony Magazine for being one of 30 leaders of the future. He was also recently awarded with the 1987 New Carolinian Award as a distinguished University of South Carolina graduate. Later, he founded F & E Invest ment Brokerage Inc., In Colum bia, S. C. He eventually joined North Carolina National Bank. The self-motivated business man Is also the first black the South Carolina General Assem bly has elected to the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees. Foster earned his B.S. degree in finance from USC In 1980 where he also a sprinter on the track team. Afterwards, he gained a real estate license and sold property during the summer while In col lege. He also worked as a South Carolina National Bank man agement trainee for nine months. As a hard-driving entrepren eur. Foster Is making his dream happen with determination and persistence. "His actions speaK for themselves," says Jordan from his auto parts store recent ly. "1 meet with him from time to time and I don't doubt his de cisions because he always does his homework." His parents now live in Rock Hill and he attributes his suc cess to his upbringing. "Our parents taught us to be leaders, not followers. They In stilled that kind of allitude in us at an early age and It has helped me In business." Married to Chandra Foster, and expecting a new baby soon, the Fosters are members of the Northvlew Church of Christ In Charlotte. Describing himself as a deeply religious man, enjoys all types of sports, the arts and reading when not busy.
