Page lOB - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Thursday, May 26. 1988 Harvin Expected To Give JCSU A Big Boost In Women’s Basketball Harvin By JAMES CUTHBERTSON Post Sports Writer Hoping to expand upon Its greatest record In history (18-7), the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls place a lot of hope and faith in its newest recruit. Melissa Harvtn of Alcolu, South Carolina. The senior power forward Is 5- 8 and 147. The daughter of Marie and William Harvin Is the niece of Dan Harvin, a former quarter back at Johnson C. Smith from 1969 through 1973. Coached by John Thames at Manning High School, she aver aged 14.3 points per game and 13 rebounds per game while her team went 25-2. She was the Sumter Item's Player of the Year. After completing a stint In the National Guard, she will enter JCSU In the second semester. She has lettered In basketball for four years. "Missy Is a very good player with good inside moves," said Thames. "She can rebound and take the ball to the basket. She did a great Job for me." She was the second leading scorer on the team and led the team in rebounding on a team with live seniors. 'We have had the same girls to gether since the seventh grade," Harvin said. "So we really felt we were going to have a good year this year. Pla3dng together so long really helped us. We knew what each other liked to do. What we did veiy well was the eye contract between us. We didn't have to say a word." Harvin has been a double digit Brentley rebounder In each of her four starting years grabbing 11.4 as a sophomore and 11.6 as a jun ior. For her career, she averaged 10.8 In high school. "Most of my points every game come off of rebounds," she said. "1 just like to get Inside position and get the rebounds. I would rather rebound than score. It Is like coach Thames said, 'A re bound on the offensive board Is worth four points, two you get and the two you take away from them.'" Harvin got her taste for re bounding In her early days In grade school. How? She would take to the court with her male classmates. "I would always bring the ball to school and play with the guys," she said. "The girls were a little too soft for me." Harvin Is happy about her de cision to attend Johnson C. Smith saying, "I believe it will be a great school for me. I am really looking forward to playing for the Golden Bulls." 'We are excited to get a player of Missy's caliber," said Coach Hythla Evans-Llebert. 'We be lieve she can really help us. She can really play." West Charlotte's Rhonda Brentley, 5-3 110 point guard, averaged 12 points per game last year for a team that made It to the state semifinals. She is Coach Evans-Llebert's second slgnee. Their recent athletic his tory has been poor and they did not feel that It would be In their best Interests to join the MID EASTERN 4A. Southeast Gull- ford, another 4A school, also opted out of the Greensboro/ Winston-Salem 4A conference to play Its 3A rivalry.
