BEST Promotes The Best
When my editor sent me to "do
lunch" with the 1988 BEST I’ro-
gram last Friday, 1 was a little bit
apprehensive. You know how It
Is. Rubber chicken, mashed po
tatoes that somebody has been
using to hang wallpaper--
covered with gravy that looks
and smells like tobacco Juice.
Well, It didn't turn out that way.
I was Impressed . Especially by
the young people I met at lunch.
The 1988 BEIST Program Is a
joint project of the Charlotte
Business League and the UNCC
College of Business Administra
tion. The acronym means Black
Enterprise Summer TYalnlng.
The goal of BEST Is to get
black university students Inter
ested In smedl business owner
ship and entrepreneurship.
Qualified black student
"fellows" are placed with suc
cessful business owners from
the Charlotte Business League.
The young people will receive a
salaiy--pald by grant funds
through UNCC. Each student
will work closely with the busi
ness owner. Thus they will get a
chance to work In the real-world
marketplace.
The luncheon 1 went to was the
kickoff of BEST. Many luminar
ies were there. Some were peo
ple connected with BEST, others
were there to observe.
The BEST kickoff luncheon be
longed to Its founders and the
kids, though. They are onto
something that's been needed a

Murphy and Freda Powell.
UNCC College of Business
Administration professors who
are working wiUi BEST are Bob
Hornaday, D.B.A, Stella Nkomo,
Ph.D. and Ben Nunnally, D.B.A
'This is a great opportunity for
the students," says Vincent
James, who Is board chairman
of the Charlotte Business
League. "We are looking to mak
ing this an annual event. We are
grateful to Dr. Nunnally for
helping to put this together."
As 1 said, I was Impressed and
pleasantly suiprised. The kids
were bright and eager. Speech
es weren't too long. And the
food was great!
The Blue Room at McDonald's
Cafeteria was jammed with peo
ple sparking Ideas off each oth
er. 1 talked with the students af
ter It was over. The UNCC and
CBL honchos might learn as
much from these guys as they
think they can teach them.
I hope 1 get Invited to their
next fling. I'll do lunch with the
likes of Ihem anytime!

On Tuesday, May 31, I, respectfully, ask for your vote and support to become
the Democratic Nominee for the District Two Seat on your County Commission.
My decision to run for re-election did not come easy. It came after a lot of
prayer and consultation. I do not seek to return to the District Two Seat for
selfish reasons. I am offering myself because of my sincere desire to serve
my fellow citizens.
Regardless of the incorrect information being put out by my opponent and his
supporters; regardless of what many in the media would have you to believe, I
know within my heart and soul of my effectiveness as your County Commis
sioner. I am and can continue to be effective. For those who doubt this or
would like to challenge this statement, I invite them to review the official
minutes of the County Commission which are located in the Clerk to the Board
Office located on the fifth floor of the new City-County Office Building on
South Davidson Street.
You, along with myself, have invested too much time and energy in my nearly
ten years of service on your County Commission. These years have provided
me an opportunity to gain valuable experience and an indepth knowledge of
County government. I do not believe you want to throw this experience and
knowledge out of the window.
At a time of dealing with a county budget of approximately 390 million dollars
and the complex problems of county government, experience is needed and ex
perience counts.
Again let me express my sincere apology to you and the entire community for
the regrettable situatuon in which I found myself. I thank God and all of you
for your love and forgiveness. Also, let me thank the many hundreds and
thoudsands of you who have shown your love and support for my family and me
during a most difficult period in our lives.
Let us move forward together as we continue to struggle to build for a better
Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Again, I ask for your vote and support on May 31
1988.
Thank you and God bless,
Paid For By The Committe To Re-Elect, Bob Walton, County Commissioner
