Page lOB - THE CHARtOTTE POST - Thursday, September 29, 1988 U.S. Basketball Human Continued From Page 9B In the future, the U.S. should look at scrapping the all-star team concept for the Oljmiplcs. One Idea that deserves a look is Inviting the NCAA champion to represent the nation, a common practice up until the 1950s. Or now that athletes can actually be paid and participate in the Games, the NBA cham pions could be a representative group. If professional tennis players could participate this year, why not the best pro team? But as Thompson said, the team will probably be allowed back into the country. Not as 01}mipic champions, though. Livingstone Golf Coach Moves To Greener Pasture Maintaining a positive attitude and pleasant smile has been the classic trademark of Living stone College golf coach and admissions counselor, Andre Springs. A native of Charlotte and grad uate of Fayetteville State Uni versity, Springs who guided the Bears to back-to-back CIAA Championships and national rankings, has resigned to be come Director of the Highland Park Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio effective September 21th. Springs indicated that High land Park is the site of the na tional black college finals, and also cited his desire to work with Junior programs on a wide spread basic while being able to spend more time concentrating on developing his own game. Friends, co-workers and golf team members recently gath ered in the Aggrey Student Un ion on the Livingstone Campus to roast Springs and share in some good natured revelry. Dr. Walter Hawks, Vice- President of Student Affairs commended Springs for his work as an Admissions Counse lor which won him a state-wide award for his efforts in 1982. According to Dr. Hawks "in per forming his duties, Andre had a positive, progressive attitude that I wish our students would emulate as a positive role mod el”. The Bears won the CIAA Golf Championship in 1985, placed second in 1986, then first again each of the past two seasons, earning conference coach of the year in 1987 and 1988. Living stone placed second in the na tional tournament at Cleveland in 1987 and fifth this year. Perhaps his most notable ac complishments were personal as last year he and partner Lar ry Frost became the first black team to win the Labor Day Four Ball Championship at the Salis bury Country Club. Springs also won the 1985 North-^uth Car olina Minority Championship and the 1986 East-West Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona. In expressing his gratitude for the surprise roast Springs sim ply stated, "Livingstone has been a wonderful experience for me. It's been a good nine years". Springs and his wife Chlquita have been married for six years and they have a son Andre, Jr. Game Change Johnson C.
