Smith University (JCSU) back in 1980. They soon became campus fa vorites for their performances of both original and popular music. They were regulars in lo cal schools and nightclubs as a result. Over the years Valence has un dergone several personnel changes. Despite this the four original members remain at the heart of the band as it exists to- d^. The group represents the totad entertainment package; song writers. musicians, singers, as well as entertainers. They have been writing songs for years and have a versatile re pertoire of originals that show they have a fresh approach to making music; it's what is re ferred to as the NEW SOUND. Valence Is an experienced group. They have been touring the college circuit for the last two years. Recently they ac quired the rights of ownership to Midi Recording Studio. Valence is a scientific term that refers to a chemical reac tion resulting from forces of Within the greater power of this group are many strong ele ments that seemed determined to push this band to the top. Va lence has Just finished doing a demo of original material and their looking for a recording deal. Henry Gilmore III, lead vocal- 1st for the band, is a native of Bessemer City, N.C. He Is a grad uate of JCSU and was the soloist for the University Choir for his four years there. Gilmore Is also a "Star Search" alumni, competing in the 1986 season as a inale soloist Donald Etheridge, keyboardist for the band. Is a native of Charleston, S.C. Also a graduate of JCSU, he also received the C.W. Kemp Music Scholar Award. Etheridge was a soloist with the University Choir as Valence well. John L. Harvell Is a graduate of JCSU. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Harvell is a self-taught bassist with strong R&B In fluences. Harvell Is also a JCSU grad. Robert S. Woods plays key boards and guitar. He halls from Charleston.S.C. , and grad uated from JCSU. Valence seems loaded with tal ent and promise. Their efforts produce true sweat at every per formance.
