Page 4A - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Thursday, February 2, 1989 EDUCATION rOD/AV Art Teachers Visit Historic Egypt Dr. Esther Page Hill, associate professor of visual arts at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Mrs. June Hood, elementary art teacher in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, traveled to Cairo, Egypt, on December 30, 1988 to attend an international art con ference. The week-long second Middle East and Africa Regional Conference of the International Society for Education in Art (IN SEA) focused upon the theme Art Education and Local Tradi tion. The paintings and drawings and slides of greater than life figures of kings and queens shown were the students' inter pretation and responses to the Harnesses II Exhibit currently at the Mint Museum in Char lotte. Each piece was accompa nied by a personal statement by the student. Themes range from: If I were in Egypt, Things I would cany with me in the next life. Jewelry I could wear. Deco rating a coffin top for a Pha raoh, Egyptian foods I like. In addition to the exhibit. Dr. Hill and Mrs. Hood made pres entations on January 3, 4:30- 6:30 on research projects con ducted in Charlotte entitled. Aesthetic Traditions in Art Edu cation. Video accounts of pre- experlmental research con ducted by four classroom teachers of Charlotte- Mecklenburg: Mrs. Eleanor Dos- ter, Mrs. Robin Gurley, Mrs. An gela Taylor and Mrs. Anne Ve- lezquez, all of Irwin Avenue Open School. All are members of INSEA. Burkette Will Speak At Livingstone Dr. Tyrone Louis Burkette, president of Barber-Scotia Col lege, will be guest speaker for the Livingstone College 1989 Founders Day Observance schedule for Thursday, Febru ary 9, at 10 a.m. in Varlck Audi torium. The first observance of Founder's Day was celebrated February 10, 1894, one year af ter the death of Dr. Joseph Charles Price. Since that time the Thursday nearest his birth day has become a college-wide holiday on which the founder and first president is commem orated for his determination, in sight and resourcefulness in making a dream a reality. Dr. Burkette is a native of De troit, Michigan, and received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Livingstone, a master's of divinity degree from the Inter denominational Theological Center in Atlanta and a doctor of ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has been a minister in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Port smouth, Virginia, as well as an Instructor of philosophy at Nor folk State University. Just prior to becoming presi dent of Barber-Scotia, Dr. Burk ette, 43, was associate executive of the N,C. Synod of the Presby terian Church (USA) in Raleigh for four years. In that position, he worked with Presbyterian- supported colleges and their campus ministries. The author of several works. Dr. Burkette is currently a columnist in the "Presbyterian News" a publica tion of the Presbyterian Church (USA). On Thursday, January 12, 1989, he became the first black member in the Concord Rotary Club's 67-year history. Dr. Burkette has two children -- Michelle age 15, and Gordon age 17. As his schedule permits, he enjoys jazz and model rail roading. Immediately following the convocation there will be a march from Varick Auditorium to the mausoleum of Dr. Price which is located on the east side of the campus. Students will also display their talents in an Oratorical Contest focusing on "A Tribute to Dr. Price" on Tuesday, Febru ary 7, at 7:30 p.m. in room 203 of the Tubman Building on the campus. ✓ CHECK US OUT!
