It was C time, as one resident recently described, when "It was truly bliss to be alive." Not only did blacks take pride In their Afri can heritage, pride In black folk lore, pride In just being black, but It also seemed natural to be lieve that art could bridge the formidable gap between the black and white worlds, that ex cellence and merit could pro duce social change. t t John Russell, art critic of the New York times, said, when the exhibition opened at the studio Museum In Harlem, "No one In terested In the social and aes thetic history of America should njilss IL" The Fine Arts Center will present a full program of special events to complement the exhi bition, Including a four-day symposium with scholars speaking on all the cultural as pects of the Harlem Renais sance.
