Harlem Art Is Going To Tennesee
Thursday, February 23, 1989 - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Page llA
highly acclaimed Exhlbl-
^n, "Harlem Renaissance, The
of Black America," opens at
££&eekwood's Fine Arts Center
JJKNashvUle, Tennessee, June 17
l^ljd remains until August 6.
n»The Studio Museum In Harlem
£as assembled a core of over
3©'0 works by a small but repre-
^ntatlve group of artists --
sculptor Meta Warrick Fuller,
^Inters Aaron Douglas, Palmer
payden, and William H. John
son, and photographer James
San Der Zee — In order to take
fai In-depth look at some of the
^ost compelling Images by art
ists whose work first came to
i>romlnencc In Harlem during
the 1920s.
• The decade of the 20s, also
known as the Jazz Age, was a
Jtlmc that black artists, musi
cians, politicians and entre
preneurs converged on Harlem
and created what Is known as
jbe Harlem Renaissance. It was
C time, as one resident recently
described, when "It was truly
bliss to be alive." Not only did
blacks take pride In their Afri
can heritage, pride In black folk
lore, pride In just being black,
but It also seemed natural to be
lieve that art could bridge the
formidable gap between the
black and white worlds, that ex
cellence and merit could pro
duce social change.
t
t John Russell, art critic of the
New York times, said, when the
exhibition opened at the studio
Museum In Harlem, "No one In
terested In the social and aes
thetic history of America should
njilss IL"
The Fine Arts Center will
present a full program of special
events to complement the exhi
bition, Including a four-day
symposium with scholars
speaking on all the cultural as
pects of the Harlem Renais
sance. There will also be a num
ber of musical programs
featuring the music of the Jazz
Age.
The exhibition was organized
by the Studio Museum In Harlem
with support from the National
Endowment for the Arts, the Na
tional Endowment for the Hu
manities, and Philip Morris
Companies, Inc., and Is circulat
ed under the auspices of the Art
Museum Association of Ameri
