By LORA VANDERHALL lifestyles Editor The General Baptist Conven tion of North Carolina has ac cepted the challenge of keeping Shaw University a viable Insti tution. by attempting to raise one million dollars for the en dowment fund. The effort is a result of an offer from the U. S. Department of Ed ucations offer to Shaw of two million In matching funds for every dollar raised. A few years ago Shaw was about to close Its doors but vari ous Individuals and groups staged a comeback. "The University was In debt for about seven million dollars but that amount was raised In about 18 months." salcj Rev. J. B. Hum phrey. president of the General Baptist State Convention and pastor of First Baptist Church- West. The statewide effort will take place during March when more than 200.000 members of Gen eral Baptist churches are ex pected to give a minimum of $10 each to Shaw's endowment. Re gional organizational meetings with the pastors and modera tors of the churches and state associations have been held to launch the campaign. The state was split into four districts. Rev. Preston Pendergrass, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church. Is the coordinator for the associations of Ebenezer. Gaston. Gold Hill. Guiding Light. Mecklenburg. Mount Peace. Lane Creek and Rising Star. Pendergrass is responsible for working with the moderators of these associations to help meet the pastors and church mem bers. Letters requesting funds have Pendergraa* been sent to the 4.500 pastors throughout the state, as well as corporations across the United States. "An endowment Insures stabil ity to the corporate world and we need their continued sup port." said Pendergrass. The General Baptist Conven tion has set aside Sunday. March 19 as Shaw University Day. throughout the state. The University, like many oth er black Institutions, has fallen victim to cutbacks In funding but the government has made this gesture to help, if the uni versity raises the first million dollars. "Full participation is Impera tive to the success of this effort or we will loose two million dol lars." said Pendergrass.
