BUSINESS FEATURE South African Professional Appointed Marketing Director For Meineke Speaks Out On Issues Felicia Suttle has been ap pointed Director of Marketing Gpmmunlcatlons for Meineke, ^J'hlch Is headquartered In Char lotte, and has 753 Meineke Dis count Muffler Shops In the Unit- efd States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. She will head the compa ny's marketing communication program -- primarily working with the media, clients and fran chisees, and will serve as the president and CEO's communi cation link to the industry. She previously held the posi tion as Marketing Director for KUHT - Channel 8 in Houston. Ms. Suttle has extensive fran chise Industry background, and has worked for Manpower Inter national, the world's largest temporary help service compa ny, and Personnel Pool of Amer ica, an H & R Block company. Ms. Suttle is a native of Johan nesburg, South Africa, where she worked as both a newspa^ per and broadcast journalist. She studied In the United States -- obtaining her B.A. degree In Journalism and a master's de gree In communications and business from Marquette Uni versity In Milwaukee. She has taught at the university level in the area of journalism and com munications — motivating stu dents with her exciting open discussion classroom style. As she puts It, "We live In a telegen ic society, you have to keep stu dents involved, excited and mo tivated. There are just too many distractions out there." Asked about her climb up the corporate ladder, she said; "It has been a struggle, because I }iave had to fight three stereo types: race, sex and being Afri can (a foreigner). 1 have had to work three times harder to prove iriyself against the toughest odds. But this has just made me stronger. If you can face apart heid In South Africa, you can face any form of prejudice -- subtle or overt." I Elaborating on the three stere otypes, she said: "I will not go into detail about race and sex. That continues to be an ongoing struggle for women and black ^ople all over the world." She 4dded, "My biggest pet peeve i^th Americans continues to be an unfair and unfortunate per ception of Africa In this country- -amongst both blacks and whites. People still perceive Af rica as the 'dark continent,' where Africa Is the cradle of civ ilization. Africa Is rich In every way—culture and resources. Suttle is 'What perturbs me even more, the lack of pride my fellow blacks In this country have about the continent of their ori gin. Note I said continent, not country. I just can't understand how anyone in his or her bright mind can deprive themselves of such a rich legacy of culture, stability and civilization. It is crucial African-Americans get on the bandwagon and stop watching so many Tarzan mo vies and proudly Identify with their roots." According to Suttle, who Is now an American citizen. It is hard to be a black woman In a predominantly white male lleld- -corporate marketing. "I have had some shocking and exciting escapades that 1 would rather not share. 1 have had to answer questions and comments that are outright upsettlng-- questlons I feel would not have even come up If I were not black. I really feel most corporate ex ecutives lack the communica tions sophistication to deal with women--especlally black wom en. In many cases you are still relegated to administrative stat us no matter how high you go up and how much you dress for success. But I do not let anyone forget what my expertise are, and how I can assist the compa ny to be profitable. All corporate America wants is someone who will make them profitable—and that Is where I feel I lit." Asked what advice she gives her two daughters—Llndl and Zanl, she said, "Poor kids, they NHWS BULLETIN...NEWS BULLETIN. NEWS BULLETIN.... Wl)t CFjarlotte For Consistent Reports On The Black Community never stop hearing me preach ing to them. 1 stress the Impor tance of making a good impres sion at all times. I tell them to work hard and get an A on their first assignment because that sets the stage for how the teach er will grade them on following tests. "We live In a very superficial society, where people judge you by the way you look. I Impress upon my children the first three judgment points are: race, sex, and appearance. People make a determination on how they will treat you based primarily on these three factors. I emphasize to them that they represent a whole race, not just themselves. "I can't help but remember two Incidents at different compa nies: a white guy messed up a project and his supervisor said, 'Oh, Steve, he sure blew this one.' But a similar situation hap pened In another company where a black guy messed up this time, and someone said, 'I will never hire a black guy again.'" She said, "I understand that this Is just one person's opinion, but the truth Is, how many oth ers feel that way. That is why I Impress upon African-American youth to work hard In school and to work hard at changing this unfortunate negative per ception about us." Ms. Suttle said attitudes are slowly chang ing for the better. Now black youth know they can run for mayor, senator, congressman, and even President. It is crucial that more and more positive black role models are presented to them. Ms. Suttle has been actively In volved In every community she has lived Ih, which Include Mil waukee, Mlami/Fort Lauderdale, and recently Houston. She plans to be just as active In Charlotte. ^Pentt K0 More...
