In 60 countries around the world, watched on TV, as some of the music Industry's biggest names paid tribute to South African freedom-fighter Nelson Mandela In honor of his 70th birthday. Without a doubt, the concert staged at Wembley Stadium In London last summer was the largest birthday party ever held and the highlights of this histor ic event will now be available In a two-hour home video to be re leased by CBS Music Video En terprises on March 14. The Nel son Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute home video features performances from George Mi chael. Whitney Houston, Dire Straits, Sting, Eurythmics, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel and many others In one-time-only performances. Priced at $24.98, the artists' royalties will be do nated to Artists Against Apart- held as well as various South Af rican children's charities. From a political standpoint. the tribute concert was the larg est entertainment event ever held In honor of Nelson Mandela and his work against the South African government's policy of racial apartheid. The concert was held on June 11, 1988, 24 years after Mandela was sen tenced to life Imprisonment and five weeks shy of his 70th birth day. Statements of support for Mandela from Harry Belafonte wand Whoopi Goldberg are fea tured In the video and the heart felt musical performances from the leading artists of the rap. rock, pop and opera recording fields are a testament In them- A must-have Item for any mu sic video collection, the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Is a permanent record of an his toric, one-time-only concert happening. Stirring solo perfor mances including Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love Of All." Of special note is George Michael's rendition of three songs, 'Village Ghettoland," "If You Were My Woman" and "Sexual Healing," none of which are available on any of his recordings. Instructions From A Pro.., Renowned artist Elizabeth Catlett-Mora visited Charlotte last week to attend a reception In honor of an exhibition of her lithographs, currently on display at the Afro-American Cultural Center. While In town, she also held a workshop in print-making at the Spirit Square print-making studio. The Foundry. UNEY Elizabeth Catlett-Mora Youth Initiative Set To Begin At Afro Center The Youth Initiative program at the Afro-American Cultural Center plans to provide hours of fun and learning to Charlotte's young people. Currentty the program Is In Its formative stages. Center offi cials and volunteers are design ing and planning a full-slate of endeavors that will contribute to the Intellectual, psychologi cal and behavioral development of children, teens and young adults. Encompassed In the Youth Ini tiative program are two distinct programs: the Building Bridges program, an after school pro gram that Involves children from Piedmont Courts In mean ingful arts, cultural and educa tional programs, and the Char lotte Inner City Youth Choir, a program of voice Instruction, performance, fellowship and self-development that will in volve more that 100 young peo ple, ages 7 to 17 years. Additionally, the Center is for mulating what will be regularly held youth oriented classes, such as: drama, art/community projects, dance, sewing, story reading, field trips, creative writing, black male mentorship and more. The classes are scheduled to begin April 15. C^ently the Center is In need of additional volunteers and materials. Skilled and profes sional volunteers may present a class series or a one-day semi nar. Charlotte's black community is urged to assist In the Youth In itiative program by volunteer ing time or donating supplies. Volunteers will meet on Sun day, March 12, 2:30 p.m., at the Center.
