He gained public atten tion In 1986 with his first feature film, "She's Gotta Have It." Al though the filmmaker already had won the Prlx de Jeunesse Award as best new director of 1986 at the Cannes Film Festi val, Lee caught the nation by surprise with his production. "She's Gotta Have It," an unin hibited look at contemporary blacks, provided a glimpse Into the life of a young, black woman confused about her sexuality and her feelings for three vastty different men. The movie re ceived attention because It was an abnormality by Hollywood standards. The black-and-white film was shot In 12 days on a $175,000 budget with a cast of unknown black actors. The mo vie earned $8 million domesti cally. His second film, "School Daze," offered a contemporary comedy with music. It explored the uni queness of black college life. Lee has said black audiences foimd "School Daze" unsettling be cause of Its depiction of race and class. Lee's background and experi ence provided the Inspiration for his filmmaking. Although he was raised In Brooklyn, he maintained strong ties to Atlanta and attended Morehouse College, a prestig ious, small college. Its alumni Include the late Rev.
