Lee Is passionate about mak
ing significant films about
blacks. He gained public atten
tion In 1986 with his first feature
film, "She's Gotta Have It." Al
though the filmmaker already
had won the Prlx de Jeunesse
Award as best new director of
1986 at the Cannes Film Festi
val, Lee caught the nation by
surprise with his production.
"She's Gotta Have It," an unin
hibited look at contemporary
blacks, provided a glimpse Into
the life of a young, black woman
confused about her sexuality
and her feelings for three vastty
different men. The movie re
ceived attention because It was
an abnormality by Hollywood
standards. The black-and-white
film was shot In 12 days on a
$175,000 budget with a cast of
unknown black actors. The mo
vie earned $8 million domesti
cally.
His second film, "School Daze,"
offered a contemporary comedy
with music. It explored the uni
queness of black college life. Lee
has said black audiences foimd
"School Daze" unsettling be
cause of Its depiction of race
and class.
Lee's background and experi
ence provided the Inspiration
for his filmmaking. Bom In At
lanta In 1957, he moved to
Brookl)m while still a young
child. Although he was raised In
Brooklyn, he maintained strong
ties to Atlanta and attended
Morehouse College, a prestig
ious, small college. Its alumni
Include the late Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., Maynard Jack-
son, former Atlanta mayor, and
Julian Bond, former state sena
tor.
Following the success of "She's
Gotta Have It," Lee received nu
merous awards Including a Los
Angeles Film Critics Award as
best new director of 1986, an
award from the Black Filmmak
ers Hall of Fame and, most re
cently, a Special Image Award
