Generic or unbranded prod
ucts are also known as no-name
and no frills. Traditionally, re
tailers have sold two major
types of brands: National or
name brands and Store brands
(private labels). Generic foods
are just as nutritious as other
foods.
Generic foods are a source of
savings because of:
1) Product quality (cheaper In
gredients). A major source of
savings In generic fruits and
vegetables Is the substantial
wholesale price difference be
tween grades.
2) Reduced advertising and
promotion. Since generics are
not generally advertised and
promoted outside the store, this
savings In marketing cost Is
passed on to the consumer.
3) Less expensive packaging
and labeling.
Generic products are In any
suitable package available, de
pending on the best buy at the
time of manufacturing.
Generic products are an excel
lent source of nutrition at a low
er price.
