Black Anger Forcing Whites To Commit Continued from page lA. The media have also contrib uted to forcing reaction with re cent television specials on the believed superiority of black athletes and drug-related crime In Washington, D.C. a city with a 70 percent black population. Thomas said the mixed reac tions of blacks and whites sig nal people are taking notice. "These kinds of media expo sure (have) led to a heightened awareness of the problems and hence mobilized a lot of blacks Into pro-active activity that might have remained Inactive on the drawing board." he said. "For whites, I suspect that there will be one of two respons es. Those who were liberal or conservative (concerning) race relations will remain so. Those who were neutral will be forced to take a stand on these prob lems—forced to become liber als or conservatives." Thomas said pent-up anger among African-Americans could turn Into violence If frustrations continue. If America falls to react positively, there could be repeats of the destruction that marked the 1960s. Indeed, blacks In the Overtown section of Miami rlofed earlier this year after an Hispanic po lice officer killed two motorcy clists In a shooting incident. "People, regardless of how pa tient and long-suffering, eventu ally reach the Ijmlts of their fc- tlence and endurance and take matters Into their own hands to affect chance even at the risk of lost lives and/ror property, " he said. ' > "With the continuing high un- pmplqyment rates among black teenagers and the prejudice In the market place (In) imploy- rnent, housing, Sducgtlon, pro- fmotlons and other variables i which affect the quality of life, a I repeat of the uphiavqi of the 60s ! remains a viable possibility." 10% Discount On All * Items With This' Ad or Spring & Summer Sunday, May 7, 1989 7:00 p.m. Sponsored ByiSIMPSON'S FASHIONS The Excelsior Club • 921 Beatties Fd.
