Gospel Music Greats Join TV Stars
On New Children's Album Venture
CHATSWORTH, CA - In sim
ple words, what kind of record
ing emerges when some of gos
pel music's greatest singers
combine with vocal and perfor
mance skills from top ranked
television personalities, a room
full of embarrassingly talented
kids emd Just about the hottest
producer/songwriter around?
In this case, the Immediate re
sult Is "Children In Praise, Vol
ume 1, Simple Words" where
concept and artistry spill past
the current leading edge in chil
dren's albums, just as Sparrow's
"Music Machine" swept to a new
frontier more than a decade
(and a million-plus unit sales)
ago.
Producer Patrick Henderson
coniblned all these elements for
thl^ flrst-of-its-klnd ten song
children's album with recording
artists BeBe & CeCe Wlnans,
Tramalne Hawkins and Denlece
Williams; television's Clifton
Davis ("Amen") and Fred "Re-run"
Berry ("What's Happening"); and
the young voices from the West
Los Angeles Church Of God In
Christ Angelic Choir, where he
serves as Music Minister for the
church.

preparations to ready the area
for the shooting. Lee moved In
quickly to seal a bond with the
residents of the area through a
huge block party the Saturday
before the shoot began. The
event was attended by Melvin
Van Peebles, Danny Aiello, Os
sie Davis and Sean Penn and set
the tone for the Involved rela
tionship that the crew would en
joy with the residents.
Music has always been an In
tegral part of Lee's films, emd he
credits Francis Ford Coppola
and Martin Scorsese for
"changing the way I hear movies.
Hielr use of sound and sound
design was an Inspiration to
me," he says. "Sound and music
are very important in my work."
For "Do the Right Thing," Lee
has produced his most ambi
tious score to date; In fact, there
are more music cues In his lat
est film than In the flat-out mu
sical "School Daze." William J.E.
Lee, Spike's father, composed
the score for "Do the Right
Thing," Just as he had on his
son's two previous features. The
music Is performed by The Nat
ural Spiritual Orchestra, featur
ing saxophonist Branford Mar
salis.
The soimdtrack, which will be
released on Motown Records,
also features songs by such di
verse artists as Public Enemy,
Ruben Blades, Take 6, Steel
Pulse, A1 Jarreau, PenT, Keith
John, Lorrl Perry and Gerald
Alston, E.U. and Guy, featuring
Teddy Riley.
