Annual Recognition Banquet was held June 22 In the Grand Ballroom of the Charlotte Mar riott City Center. The keynote speaker for the evenlng.was Mr. G. Patrick Phil lips, president, NCNB Service, Inc. The event Included recogni tion of 20 Pre-College Compo nent graduates with two pre college awards presented for the highest academic performance In INROADS Advanced Lan guage Arts and Advance Mathe matics classes. The Pre-College awards culminated with the "Pre-College Student of the Year." The College Component awards Included the Induction of ten graduating Interns Into the INROADS Alumni Associa tion and the presentation of ac ademic awards to INROADS In terns who have earned 3.0 and above cumulative grade point averages during the 1988-89 school year. Progress awards were also giv en for significant academic im provement. The highlight of the college wards was the presentation to the most outstanding INROADS interns, "The INROADS Scholar of the Year" and the "Inroader of the Year." Started In 1982, INROADS/ Charlotte Is one of 34 affiliate offices around the country dedi cated to developing qualified business and engineering pro fessionals. Its mission Is to de- -"fT^ velop and place talented minor ity youth In business and indus try and prepare them for corpo rate and community leadership. More than 1,000 companies na tionwide sponsor INROADS col lege Interns. As of 1988, participation In INROADS/Charlotte has Includ ed 62 college Interns, 31 pre college students and 26 alumni. Charlotte's INROADS program Is repiorted to be one of the most success ful affiliates. INROADS/ Charlotte Is direct ed by Sandra McMullen In 1986 INROADS/ Charlotte was rec ognized for having both the second highest overall rat ing and the second highest College Component perfor mance rating of all INROADS affiliates nationwide. McMullen Is very enthusiastic about her work and about INROADS in gener al. "INROADS gives me the opportunity to Interact with and develop future lead ers," she says. However. IN ROADS Is a de manding program. Adds McMullen, "It's a great organi zation and a great opportumty, but It's not for eve rybody." Students In the Pre-College Component attend seminars and classes year-round, and stu dents In the College Component are evaluated hi the school and the workplace. INROADS college freshmen are required to study 35 hours per week outside of class and turn In time- management worksheets week ly. In addition, all Inroaders are required to participate In com munity service activities. "INROADS doesn't just develop youth to be scholars, but well- rounded Individuals who have an understanding and respect for themselves, their culture and that of others," says McMullen. INROADS Scholar of the Year BSlchael LaSane This year's recipient Is a rising sen ior at Johnson C. Smith University, majoring In Accounting with a 3.8 cumulative grade point average. He Interns with Cablevlslon of Char lotte. The INROADER of the Tear Gregory Bryant This year's recipient Is a Duke Aca demic Scholarship, Honors College, Dean's List (JCSU), President's List and National Dean's List student. He has received numerous academic awards and Is Involved In several community and professional activi ties and organizations. Alexander Scholarships Presented Barry LaMont Ray of Wilson, NC Is a recipient of the Kelly M. Alexander Memorial Schol arship, announced Kelly M. Al exander Jr., president of the North Carolina NAACP and Mrs. Margaret Alexander Sr., chair of the scholarship fund. Ray Is one of three recipients of the 1969 - 90 scholarship that is funded ty Carolina Telephone and Telegraph. The other recip ients are Tonla Clemons and Lisa Givens. The recipients will each receive checks for $1,000 which Is to be used to hc4> defray educational expenses. Ray attends N.C. A&T State University In Greensboro, where he has maintained a 3.34 grade point average. He is a engineer ing major. A member of the N.C. A&T college chapter of the NAACP, Alpha Phi Mu, Alpha Chi National Honor Society: Ray has been a Dean's list student since 1986. The scholarships are given In memoiy of the late Kelly M. Al exander Sr., who was elected chairman of the NAACP Nation al Board of Directors In 1984.
