It Is the first pre-school In Charlotte to be so accredited and one of 16 tn North Carolina. The Academy recognizes programs which meet national standards of quality In early childhood pro grams. Op>en Door School, located at 234 N. Sharon Amity Road, serves approximately one 100 children from ages two to five, according to Its director. Holly NevlU. "Accreditation helps answer ^the question, 'What Is a quality pre-school program?'" said Dr. ■"Marilyn Smith, executive direc tor of the National Association for the Eklucatlon of Young ChU- dren (NAEYC), which sponsors the Academy. "Most parents wemt to find the highest quality program for their young chil dren, but few parents know how to assess whether a program meets more than Just the mini mum standards required by state licensing." The Academy's standards were developed over a three-year per iod with Imput from approxi mately 200 educators and ad ministrators from around the country. It was launched In 1985 by NAEYC. which Is the nation's oldest and largest asso ciation of early childhood pro fessionals. "Accreditation Is not meant to replace parents' on-sIte visits to centers as a means for selecting the program that best meets their child's needs," Smith said, "but accreditation does help point out to parents the varied components that should be present In a quality program." High school graduates should provide transcripts, di ploma, General Education De velopment (GED) Certificate, or over age 16 and have the ability to benefit from the training. This ability to benefit Is determined by passing our entrance test. Provide us with a letter of rec ommendation from your high school principal, parent or guardian. The Instructor Training course requires a high school diploma or GED and a VEilld North Caroli na Cosmetology license. On the basis of personal Inter view with a staff member an ap titude and dexterity test, a limit ed number of special students can be admitted.
